Hello everyone,
I am currently planning the renovation of my walk-in closet and would like to use the Ikea PAX system for this. I have come across different models and am wondering which PAX variants are best suited for walk-in closets.
My requirements are:
- Stability for wide units
- Flexibility in interior fittings (drawers, clothing rods, shelves)
- As tall modules as possible to maximize storage space
I am also interested in any specific recommendations regarding PAX doors that are more practical for a walk-in closet – for example, sliding doors vs. hinged doors, or options with mirrors.
I look forward to your experiences and advice to help me make the right choice.

The PAX system basically offers two main frame depths: 35 cm and 58 cm (14 inches and 23 inches). For walk-in wardrobes, the 58 cm (23 inches) deep models are better suited, as they provide enough space for hanging clothes.
Additionally, I recommend the 236 cm (93 inches) high modules (the standard for PAX) since they can be optimally utilized in most cases. For larger rooms, there is the "PAX Tall" version with a height of up to 201 cm (79 inches), although these are less common.
For interior fittings, a combination of hanging rods and drawers is advisable. Sliding doors often save space, but there must be enough room in front of the wardrobe for easy operation.

In addition to Lorukeo’s important points:
- A depth of 58 cm (23 inches) is especially practical if you want to hang multiple layers of clothing side by side, as around 50–55 cm (20–22 inches) is needed for hangers.
- Sliding doors are great when there is limited space for opening, but for wider walk-in closets, hinged doors can be more comfortable because they allow better access.
- Mirrored doors offer several advantages in walk-in closets, such as reflecting light and allowing quick outfit checks.
If storage for shoes and accessories is important, drawers and shelves provide flexible options.

MARSAN, to answer your question specifically, you should consider the following factors for the PAX models intended for walk-in closets:
- Module height: The standard heights for PAX are 201 cm (79 inches) or 236 cm (93 inches). For rooms with higher ceilings, you can choose 236 cm, which provides more storage space at the top. This also offers a better opportunity to store items you rarely use in the upper areas.
- Frame depth: A depth of 58 cm (23 inches) is recommended for walk-in closets because the 35 cm (14 inches) depth is often too shallow for hanging clothes. Layered hanging is also easier with 58 cm.
- Interior fittings: Use PAX system accessories such as adjustable hanging rods, drawers, shelves, and doors with soft-close mechanisms. This greatly improves usability.
- Doors: Sliding doors look attractive and save space. However, you should ensure there is enough clearance in front of the wardrobe, as sliding doors require at least the width of the door for opening space. Hinged doors provide full access and are easier to adapt, especially in corners or small intermediate spaces.
- Material and stability: The back panels of the PAX system are thin, so I recommend firmly anchoring the wardrobe to the wall, especially if it is built wide – this ensures stability.
One final recommendation: Walk-in closets greatly benefit from modular elements that you can combine as needed. Consider whether a corner unit might be useful to avoid wasted space.
Do you already have exact measurements and ideas about room use? That would help give better advice.

For walk-in wardrobes, I recommend the PAX models with a depth of 58 cm (23 inches) and a height of at least 2.36 m (7 ft 9 in).
Sliding doors are good when there is limited space for door clearance. Hinged doors can be preferred for easier access. Mirror doors add value.
Make sure to have secure wall mounting for large wardrobes.

Additionally, I would add that sliding doors are typically better in walk-in closets when the space is narrower and you can’t stand directly in front of each closet section. In larger walk-in closets with enough room to move around, hinged doors are more comfortable because they provide easier access to the entire interior.
For the interior layout, it is also advisable to use adjustable clothing rods and flexible shelves to make optimal use of the space.
