Hello everyone, I’m planning to use the Ikea Platsa system specifically as a shoe rack and want to store as many shoes as possible in an organized and practical way. I’m particularly interested in how to configure the Platsa optimally, so that it not only provides a lot of storage space but also keeps the shoes easily accessible. Maybe you have tips on useful interior fittings like shelves, drawers, or shoe holders that work well for this purpose. What dimensions and arrangements work best for storing sneakers, boots, and shoes effectively? I look forward to your experiences and recommendations on using the Platsa as a smart and user-friendly shoe rack.

An optimal shoe rack using the Ikea PLATSA system primarily requires a well-considered combination of adjustable shelves and drawers. For sneakers and low-cut shoes, I recommend using regularly adjustable shelves, as they can accommodate various shoe heights flexibly. Boots, on the other hand, are better stored in larger, taller compartments, possibly even without a shelf to make full use of the height. I also find it practical to keep the compartments from being too deep so that the shoes remain easily accessible. An ideal depth is around 30-35 cm (12-14 inches). Additionally, you can enhance the PLATSA system doors with inward-mounted shoe holders to make efficient use of space and create extra organization.

I would like to add that with the PLATSA system, it is practical to plan the units in a modular way and easily expand them later if needed. For shoes, for example, inserts made of wire baskets or plastic boxes can be used, which are easy to pull out and help keep things organized. It is important not to stack the shoes too tightly, as this can cause problems when trying to take them out. Labeling can also be helpful for larger collections. Additionally, good ventilation can help prevent odors and moisture, so it is better to use open compartments with wire shelves or doors with ventilation slots.

Here is a brief tutorial on how I assembled my PLATSA shoe rack:

- First, I identified the different types of shoes, including measurements of boots, sneakers, and ballet flats.
- Then, I chose standardized compartment widths of 60 cm (24 inches) to ensure enough space per unit.
- For the lower shelves, I used adjustable shelves spaced about 18 cm (7 inches) apart, which fits the flatter shoes well.
- At the top, where more boots are stored, I made the compartments taller and slightly deeper, which saves space.
- Transparent-lidded shoe boxes help me keep the shoes clean and visible while not wasting much room.

Tip: Make sure to stabilize the system if you build the compartments taller, as the weight of the boots can cause the rack to warp easily.

Simply install adjustable shelves at different heights and leave open compartments for tall shoes. Doors help protect against dust. Shoe boxes can also be stacked to save space.

I personally find that the combination of open shelves and drawers works very well with PLATSA. Drawers are great for smaller shoes or for the autumn/winter season with bulkier footwear because they protect against dust and are easy to access. I use open compartments for shoes that are worn regularly.

One more tip: A shoe rack should be arranged so that it doesn’t get too tall. Ideally, it should reach no higher than hip height, otherwise bending down or reaching up becomes inconvenient. This is especially beneficial in small apartments.
