Hello everyone,

I am considering how to effectively use Ikea Pax wardrobes for storing tools. My goal is to create an organized, easily accessible solution for hand tools and power tools in the garage or hobby room. I am particularly interested in the best ways to customize the interior of the Pax system—specifically, which shelves, drawers, or organizers are suitable to store tools of various sizes safely and efficiently.

At the same time, it would be helpful to get tips on how to distribute the weight properly to keep the wardrobe stable. Do you have any experience with expansions or custom modifications for the Pax series to make it suitable for tool storage?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

I have also tried the pegboard system inside the Pax wardrobe.

Does anyone know of suitable systems that work well with the Pax, or have found their own solutions?

I use small pegboards that I attach directly to the inside of the doors with appropriate spacers. It’s important to store only lightweight tools there to avoid overloading the door hinges.

For heavier tools, shelves with fixed compartments are more suitable.

Important: Make sure not to overload the doors with too much weight to maintain proper function. I once installed hinges with soft-close dampers, which improves the opening experience and protects the fittings.

Thanks for the tip about using spacers on the door. I think that’s a good compromise between flexibility and weight distribution.

I will definitely keep that in mind.

What about the stability of the drawers? Do you have recommendations for particularly sturdy drawer slides that can support the weight of tools, or should I only use the drawers for smaller hand tools and accessories?

Regarding the stability of the drawers: Original Pax drawers are generally designed for moderate loads, typically for clothing or small workshop items.

If you want to store heavier tools, I would recommend installing drawer inserts with sturdy metal runners.

Alternatively, you can use separate drawer units (e.g., tool carts) or sturdy boxes that can be removed when needed.

Proper anchoring of the entire cabinet to the wall is essential when heavily loaded to prevent the risk of tipping.

A brief addition on the topic of organization and fine-tuning:

- Use modular tool inserts for different types of tools, such as screwdrivers, pliers, bits, etc.
- Plastic or foam inserts can be cut to size and fit well in drawers.
- Plan several smaller drawers for small parts and, depending on tool usage, larger compartments for bulkier items.
- Remember to store power tools separately in padded cases to protect them from impact.

These measures help keep the system organized and protect tools from damage.
