Hello everyone,

I am considering how to effectively use Ikea Pax wardrobes for storing tools. My goal is to create an organized, easily accessible solution for hand tools and power tools in the garage or hobby room. I am particularly interested in the best ways to customize the interior of the Pax system—specifically, which shelves, drawers, or organizers are suitable to store tools of various sizes safely and efficiently.

At the same time, it would be helpful to get tips on how to distribute the weight properly to keep the wardrobe stable. Do you have any experience with expansions or custom modifications for the Pax series to make it suitable for tool storage?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

The Pax wardrobes are generally sturdy, but you should pay attention to the maximum weight capacity of the shelves, especially if heavy power tools are planned.

I recommend using strong shelves made of metal or thick plywood, as the original particleboard shelves can sag under excessive load. You can equip the Pax interior doors with hook rails or tool holders to keep smaller hand tools easily accessible.

Distribute the weight as evenly as possible across multiple levels to ensure stability.

Here is a brief guide on how to optimally store tools in an Ikea Pax wardrobe:

- First, consider what type of tools you have (hand tools, power tools, small parts).
- Use sturdy inserts: metal shelves or thick wooden boards can support more weight.
- Install drawers with strong runners to keep small parts well organized.
- Use storage systems like cutlery trays or toolboxes to maintain order.
- Attach magnetic strips or hook rails to the inside of the doors for screwdrivers, pliers, etc.
- Pay attention to the cabinet height: vertical organizers and tool holders can save space.

Common mistakes include overloading the shelves or using unsuitable inserts, which can cause the shelves to warp. If you use the doors as tool holders, make sure they don’t become too heavy.

The maximum load capacity of the original Pax shelves is about 25 kg (55 lbs). This is often insufficient for tools, as power tools can be noticeably heavier. Therefore, reinforcing or replacing the shelves should be considered.

A common method is to insert plywood panels, properly supported on or fitted between the side rails. Hinged door hardware should be checked for stability when carrying very heavy loads.

Additionally, using modular tool storage systems inside the cabinets is recommended, as they provide efficient space organization and easy access. If the cabinet is used in a workshop, securing the base to the floor or bracing it against the wall is advisable to increase stability and prevent tipping.

Super interesting question! I love customizing Ikea PAX for so many things :-)

My tip: Get some sturdy, pull-out drawers from Ikea (e.g., the VARIERA BOXEN) and combine them with self-made organizer inserts. This works really well for nails, screws, and small tools.

What I also do: Stick magnetic strips to the inside of the doors, so you always have your main screwdrivers, pliers, and similar tools within easy reach! And when you replace the shelves, use solid wood panels. They really hold up well.

One more thing: I secured my cabinet to the wall with brackets, which gives it excellent stability. Enjoy your DIY project!

Thank you all in advance for the helpful answers.

I am considering whether it makes sense to install some kind of perforated panel system inside the doors or even within the wardrobe itself. This would increase storage flexibility and make organizing easier.

Does anyone know of suitable systems that work well with Pax, or has found their own solutions? I am also uncertain whether the doors might suffer from the extra weight or potentially warp.
