Hello everyone, I am currently facing the challenge of planning and installing an Ikea Metod kitchen in an apartment with a non-rectangular room. The kitchen is L-shaped with slanted walls and a small niche that exceed standard dimensions. My question is: What strategies are there to fit Ikea Metod components accurately and functionally in unusual kitchen layouts? I am particularly interested in how to handle the often non-exactly fitting modules and adapting the countertops to slanted walls or corners. Are there any special tips for installation, attaching panels, or selecting tall cabinets? I want to minimize on-site craftsmanship as much as possible but am open to recommendations on how to best work with the Metod system in this situation. Thanks in advance for your tips and experiences!

The carousel corner cabinets generally fit well into the Metod system and are practical for use in angled corners. Their depth usually does not significantly differ from standard cabinets, but it is true that the countertop in the corner needs to be adjusted with millimeter precision. It is often helpful to prepare a loose countertop in the corner with cutouts or angle cuts accordingly. This way, the countertop can sit neatly, even if the cabinets have varying depths.

Apart from cabinets and panels, I also recommend paying special attention to connection strips and trim pieces. Transitions in unusual kitchen layouts often look untidy quickly. For the best appearance, it is worth sanding thoroughly here and, if necessary, making precisely cut pieces from acrylic or wood. Additionally, self-adhesive edge profiles are helpful for angled or cut-out surfaces. This makes the installation not only more functional but also more aesthetically pleasing.

Thank you for the tip! Are there specific fastening methods for installing countertops that work better for corners with angled walls, or is the usual clamping and screwing to the cabinets sufficient? I’m looking for the most stable and durable solution that prevents gaps from settling or slight movements.

For securing the countertop to sloped walls, using angle brackets or mounting brackets is recommended to firmly attach the countertop to the base cabinets. Additionally, a flexible sealant, such as acrylic, applied along the edges can help accommodate slight movements and prevent gaps. It is important that the countertop fits precisely without excessive pressure marks to ensure long-term stability.

In addition to using the mentioned brackets, it is also advisable to leave a small gap between the countertop and the walls to prevent swelling caused by moisture. This gap can be neatly concealed with flexible trim strips or silicone. Keep in mind that kitchens often experience temperature and humidity fluctuations, which cause the wood to expand. When installing the countertop on METOD cabinets, make sure to screw it in at several points without creating stress or tension across the surface.
