Hello everyone, I am currently planning to assemble my Ikea Metod kitchen and am facing the challenge of fitting the toe kicks precisely in the corners. Specifically, I want to know the best way to connect the toe kicks in both inside and outside corners so that they join cleanly, without unsightly gaps or overlaps. Is there a particular angle I should cut on the toe kicks, or are connector pieces usually used here? Also, I am curious whether the Ikea Metod toe kicks need to be cut to size or if they are delivered already fitted. I have the issue that my walls are not completely straight, which makes things more complicated. How do you handle these situations? I would appreciate any detailed instructions, including tips on the proper use of tools and the order of installation.

I would like to know if I really need to cut the baseboards to size myself, or if it is enough to adjust them by filing or sanding a little?

Hello! Basically, baseboards need to be cut to size, especially the mitre cuts at the corners, otherwise they won’t fit together exactly. Sanding alone usually isn’t enough because the angle won’t be correct and gaps will appear. It’s important to measure the angle of your corner precisely and cut the boards accordingly with a mitre saw. Sanding is only for fine adjustment afterwards.

Should I cut and install the baseboards first, or build and align the kitchen completely and install the baseboards afterwards?

It is advisable to fully assemble and align the base kitchen cabinets first, since the baseboards are attached to the cabinet frames. This way, you can better compensate for gaps and unevenness, and the baseboards will fit cleanly.

I find this topic very interesting because I had similar uncertainties when assembling my Metod kitchen. It is really frustrating when you expect the baseboards to simply snap on, but then realize that cutting and adjustments are necessary. What helped me was to stay calm at first and work with small test assemblies. It is also important to occasionally remove and realign the trim before permanently fixing it to avoid frustration later on. A little patience goes a long way; otherwise, the result can quickly look untidy.

Quick recap: The Metod baseboards should be installed after setting up the kitchen base units. You need to measure the angles for corners precisely, not estimate. Cutting at 45 degrees is standard for 90-degree corners. Adjust accordingly if there are deviations. Finish and fine-tune with sandpaper or a rasp.

One small addition: If you have an inside corner, consider making the miter cuts slightly shorter and sealing the moldings with color-matched silicone or acrylic caulk. This effectively hides small gaps between the moldings caused by uneven walls. For outside corners, this is usually more difficult, and precise mitering is more important. Additionally, for walls with larger irregularities, you can use thinner moldings or modify the back side of the moldings slightly to improve the pressing force.

This is a good tip to achieve a clean look when the wall alignment is not perfect.

One more point about tools: If you don’t have a miter box, you can use a well-calibrated miter saw or a cordless multi-tool with a guide rail, as long as it is set up precisely. The key remains accurate measuring and repeatedly checking before cutting.

Thank you all for the helpful tips! I will proceed by first aligning and assembling the base kitchen cabinets completely, then accurately measuring the angles of my corners and precisely cutting the baseboards to size. For uneven areas, I will adjust the baseboards accordingly and, if necessary, seal gaps with acrylic. If I have any further questions, I will be happy to ask again!
