Hello everyone, I am currently planning the installation of an Ikea Metod kitchen unit in my new apartment. To work as efficiently and accurately as possible, I have a question here: How can I optimize the installation of Ikea Metod kitchen units?

I am especially interested in tips for preparation, the right tools, potential pitfalls when assembling the base cabinets, as well as advice on correctly leveling and securing the modules to the wall and floor.

Does anyone have experience with special techniques that save time and significantly improve the results? What sequence has proven effective? And how can I avoid damage to the cabinets or the wall?

I look forward to your well-founded advice, technical guidance, and any practical recommendations that can make the installation easier and more sustainable.

Is there an optimal sequence for installing the cabinet back panels?

In addition to Cassandra’s answer, I recommend not fully screwing in the back panels right away, but initially fixing them partially. This way, you can make adjustments later if minor alignment changes are needed before everything is finally secured.

Also, please ensure that none of the back panels interfere with the installation of the countertop. With Metod, there are cutouts and slots for this purpose, so you should check them beforehand.

To address the question about tool equipment:

- A cordless drill with adjustable torque settings is essential.
- A retractable tape measure or a good measuring rod for precise measurements.
- A long spirit level (at least 80 cm (31 inches) in length) for accurate alignment.
- Masking tape or painter’s tape to mark lines on walls.
- A try square for checking right angles, especially important for corner solutions.

Avoid cheap screwdrivers or impact drivers without proper control, as this can lead to over-tightening, which weakens the stability.

I have gone into more detail regarding the alignment and stabilization of the base cabinets:

1. Floor level check
Before starting the installation, you should carefully check not only the wall but especially the floor. Irregularities are often the cause of later problems. A laser level is very helpful here, if available.

2. Installation of feet and height-adjustable leveling screws
Metod feet can be individually adjusted. Work in small steps gradually. Never fully extend all the feet right away.

3. Connection clips and screws
The cabinets are joined using special connecting screws and clips. I recommend inserting all clips at all connection points first, then tightening the screws lightly but not fully. After that, check and align again – only then tighten the screws completely.

4. Wall mounting
There is a universal rail that can be mounted horizontally on the wall, onto which the cabinets can simply be hooked. This rail minimizes alignment errors and makes assembly much easier.

5. Worktop
Before installing the worktop, the cabinet structure should be fixed in its final position. The worktop is fastened with special screws and brackets provided in the Ikea kit.

Background information:

Metod kitchen units are modular, which on one hand offers flexibility, but on the other requires precise installation. The quality depends greatly on careful preparation and gradual adjustment.

Make sure to always leave enough space from the wall in case there are still electrical or water connections. Sometimes the wall is not perfectly straight; in that case, it is better to compensate with washers or small wedges to ensure devices fit properly later.

This is a crucial tip. The mounting rail (also known as the Metod wall bracket) plays an essential role in stability and correct alignment.

Make sure to install this rail perfectly level, otherwise the entire cabinet will be crooked. A spirit level and a second person for checking are very helpful here.

If in doubt, pre-drill the holes in the wall and secure them with appropriate anchors to avoid the need for adjustments later.

I can only recommend accompanying the assembly with some music – it makes the process more relaxing and helps you stay focused. ;-)

Otherwise: Don’t just tighten the connections firmly; occasionally loosen them again and realign slightly if something doesn’t fit right. It’s better to invest a bit of patience than end up frustrated with crooked doors or uneven countertops.

And very important: embrace small gaps or irregularities, which can later be concealed with silicone or small cover strips.
