JukauHello everyone, I am about to start a project to securely mount IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets on drywall and would appreciate some expert advice. The walls are entirely made of standard 12.5 mm (1/2 inch) drywall panels on metal or wooden studs. The Metod units are quite heavy, especially when fully loaded, and the load from the countertop and wall cabinets should not be underestimated.
My question is: Which fasteners and installation methods are recommended for safely mounting Metod kitchen units on drywall to prevent bending or screw pull-out? Are there effective reinforcements or special anchors that work better in this case? And is it better to attach directly to the studs or just to the drywall panels?
Thanks in advance for any tips and experience!

Hello Jukau, this is a very important question because drywall alone is not designed to support the heavy load of kitchen cabinets. Basically, you should always try to attach the Metod furniture to the studs behind the drywall. You can locate the studs using a digital stud finder and place the mounting screws directly into them. If that is not possible or the studs are in an inconvenient position, I recommend using heavy-duty metal toggle anchors or specialized hollow wall anchors for drywall. Typical plastic anchors often fail here because the load is too heavy. Additional reinforcement can be achieved by installing a mounting board made of wooden battens behind the drywall, which you then use as the mounting surface. It is also important to distribute the load and plan for as many attachment points as possible.

Could you recommend specific anchor brands or types that you have successfully used for kitchen installations on drywall? I prefer to avoid any experiments, as the cabinets are not easy to rehanging.
Sure! For securing to drywall, I often use metal expansion anchors, such as Fischer Hollow Metal or similar heavy-duty anchors. It is important that they spread widely behind the board to create large bearing surfaces. Toggle bolts with a minimum span of 50mm (2 inches) also work well. Make sure the screws are suitable for kitchen installation and are not too short. Avoid simple plastic anchors, as they tend to pull out quickly. Always fasten in the center of the panel length to maximize stability.
