Hello everyone,

I have been having an issue for some time with the hinges on my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet doors starting to squeak whenever I open or close the doors. The noise is quite annoying, especially since it happens consistently and not just after a period of disuse.

I have already tried to analyze the problem myself and suspect it might be related to the lubrication of the hinges. However, I am unsure which lubricant to use (oil, grease, silicone, or something else) and how to proceed without damaging the hinges or the door adjustment.

Additionally, I want to avoid removing the hinges completely, as all the screws are very tight and I don’t want to accidentally damage the wooden frame.

Has anyone had experience with how to cleanly and effectively fix these squeaking Ikea Metod door hinges? What lubricants are suitable, do the hinges need to be cleaned beforehand, and if so, how exactly? Are there any general tips or special tricks for handling Metod hinges?

I look forward to your advice and thank you in advance for your help!

Hello Aloisla,

The easiest solution is to use a dry silicone spray or some WD-40 contact spray.

Spray the hinge briefly, move the doors several times, and usually the noise stops. You don’t need to remove anything.

Important: Do not use oil, as it attracts dust and reduces the effect.

Hello Aloisla,

Your issue with the squeaking Ikea Metod door hinges is actually a common problem, usually caused by insufficient or old lubrication. I’ll go into some detail so you can better understand the repair process.

First, it’s important to know what type of hinge is used on Metod cabinets. Ikea typically uses concealed clip hinges made of several moving metal parts that operate in small, sometimes hard-to-reach areas.

1. Cleaning:
Before applying any lubricant, the area should be clean. Start by gently removing visible dust and dirt from the joint areas with a dry cloth or cotton swab. If you see grease or old, sticky lubricant, dab it off with isopropanol and then let it dry thoroughly.

2. Choosing the lubricant:
WD-40 is debated for lubrication because it mainly serves as a cleaner with light lubricating properties and isn’t ideal for long-term lubrication. A dry silicone spray is usually better since it doesn’t get sticky and attracts less dust. Alternatively, you can use a special sewing machine oil or fine Teflon grease, which lasts longer and lubricates effectively.

3. Application:
Apply the lubricant in several short bursts, then open and close the hinges to help distribute it well.

4. Check the screws:
Sometimes tightening the screws slightly helps as it secures the hinges better and reduces play that causes noise.

A quick question: Do all the hinges squeak or only some? And are the doors difficult to close or do they stay misaligned?

I hope these detailed tips help you!

Exactly, WD-40 is a contact spray and not a permanent lubricant. For Ikea Metod door hinges, I recommend specialized lubricants such as silicone oil or PTFE grease. These are odorless, do not attract dust, and provide long-term results.

Additionally, it is important to keep the hinges dry and clean before lubricating. Residues and old lubricant can cause noise.

Furthermore, checking the hinge alignment can be helpful, as misaligned doors often put extra pressure on the hinges, which can lead to noise.

I also recommend performing an inspection and re-lubrication every 6 to 12 months as part of regular maintenance to prevent wear.

That’s already the right approach! A little tip from me: I simply sprayed some silicone spray from a can on my hinges every 3-4 months. Then I opened and closed the doors several times – and voilà, the annoying squeaking was gone. 😊

Sometimes a small maintenance task like this is enough, and you don’t have to remove anything. Oh, and don’t worry about the screws – just tighten them with the appropriate screwdriver if they’re loose, but don’t overtighten!

If you want, I can explain exactly how I do it, step by step. That way it’s more fun, and your kitchen stays quiet!
