Hello everyone, some time ago I bought a Kallax shelving unit from Ikea and used the stylish doors that go with it. Now, some of the doors are damaged and I am considering replacing them. My question is: Are there original replacement doors for Kallax from Ikea, or do you have to look for alternatives? If so, what experiences have you had with replacement products or custom-made solutions? I need doors that are as durable and precisely fitting as possible, and easy to install. Thanks in advance for your tips!

A more sustainable approach might be to buy used doors of matching models and restore them if needed.I agree with that, but if the doors are heavily damaged, restoration can be quite labor-intensive since the melamine coating is not easy to repair.

Is it difficult to reproduce or replace the special hinges? Are there compatible alternatives available?Yes, the hinges on Kallax have a special housing designed by Ikea. However, you can often use affordable flap hinges if you slightly adjust the holes. Just make sure the doors don’t become too heavy, as standard hinges tend to wear out under excessive weight.
In summary: Finding used doors or having custom ones made and replacing the hinges with standard versions is doable, but it requires some DIY skills.
Hey tineil!
I had the same problem last year. I needed to replace several doors on my Kallax and was really annoyed that Ikea doesn’t offer individual doors.
I then had doors made from MDF with a white coating by a local carpenter and ordered the hinges from Ikea separately (surplus stock on Ebay). It worked surprisingly well and looks almost like the original. The little extra effort was worth it, especially since I now have a matte finish that doesn’t show fingerprints as quickly.
A small tip: if you decide to do this, make sure the hinges are measured exactly, or the doors won’t latch properly or will hang crooked.
And no, it’s not the end of the world, but you do need some patience. 🙂

It’s great that Ikea offers a solution for everything – even if not immediately. ;-)
I agree with pinpa and say: Patience and precise measuring are half the battle!
I also had new doors custom-made because my Kallax is almost 10 years old, and everything still works great!
So don’t get discouraged – replace your parts, and you’ll be happy every time you close the doors! 🙂

Additional information on the topic:
- Original replacement parts from Ikea are not officially available for Kallax doors.
- The door construction usually uses MDF with a melamine coating, which allows for custom manufacturing as long as the dimensions are precise.
- Hinges from standard ranges (e.g., 35mm (1.4 inch) bore hinge cups) can be used if the drilling is adjusted accordingly.
- For an accurate fit, it is recommended to create a precise dimensioned drawing including all attachment points.
In conclusion: replacements are possible, but not officially provided by Ikea; instead, they are available through third-party suppliers or custom craftsmanship.

Standard hinges can be used if the drill holes are adjustedThis is an important point! I recommend measuring the exact position of the hinges before purchasing the doors. Even the smallest deviations can later result in doors that hang crookedly or uneven gaps.

The hinges from Ikea ordered separately (leftover stock on Ebay)That sounds very practical. If anyone knows of contacts or sources, please share! I suspect many are interested if they don’t want to buy a completely new cabinet.
Finally: What about the durability of custom-made doors? Does the melamine coating on MDF last longer, or are there alternatives that are more durable, such as painted surfaces?
