Hello everyone, I am facing a somewhat unusual issue with my KALLAX shelf from IKEA. Whenever I feel a draft in my apartment with the window open, my KALLAX shelf doesn’t seem completely stable and moves slightly toward the direction of the airflow. It is a fairly large shelf that has not caused any problems so far, but this issue mainly occurs when I open the window wide and the wind noticeably flows through the apartment. I have already checked that the floor is level and that the shelf is assembled correctly – everything seems fine. Does anyone have tips or experiences on how to prevent my KALLAX shelf from repeatedly “standing in the draft” or shifting when ventilating with open windows? Thanks in advance!

That’s interesting. How strong exactly is this draft? I wonder if it’s really the draft itself or a combination of vibrations from road noise or similar external factors. Have you measured how much force or movement is actually acting on the shelf?

Also, is the shelf free-standing or placed against a wall? Sometimes just the position relative to the wall can make a difference. Generally, mechanically securing it to the wall is the most common solution, but I would first try to clearly identify the source of the movement.

Check if the shelf is fully flush with the floor. If needed, use felt pads or small furniture wedges underneath. If it is standing freely, use wall anchors. This should resolve the issue.

Hello Eikeon, I will try to provide a structured guide:

1. First, thoroughly check the base surface of the shelving unit. KALLAX often has adjustable feet, or you can use small furniture wedges to compensate for unevenness.

2. If the shelving unit is not secured to the wall, I strongly recommend fixing it to the wall to prevent tipping and sliding. IKEA usually supplies suitable brackets.

3. Check if there are small sliding surfaces under the shelving unit, for example caused by carpets or floor coverings that encourage slipping.

4. If drafts are the cause, it might be that you are creating an airflow that produces a slight negative pressure on one side of the shelving unit. A simple anchoring will eliminate these issues.

If you want to check anything else, feel free to write, I’ll be happy to assist further.

I agree with that. Often, furniture isn’t immediately stable when placed, especially on smooth floors. A simple screw or bracket fixed to the wall usually solves this easily.

You might also consider using non-slip material under the furniture feet to improve grip on the floor, such as rubber pads. This significantly reduces the effect of air drafts.

Hey, that sounds like a little furniture dance every time the wind blows ;-)

Maybe try a simple solution: stick small self-adhesive foam rubber strips under the shelf. This cushions vibrations and improves grip on smooth floors.

And if you want, you can secure the shelf with a slim wall bracket – not only does it look good, but it definitely stops it from "moving in the draft" 🙂 Good luck!
