Hello everyone, I am planning to install several IKEA Metod wall cabinets on drywall in my apartment. My specific question is: How can I securely mount IKEA Metod wall cabinets on drywall so that both the weight of the cabinets and their contents are reliably supported over time without damaging the drywall? Which fasteners are best suited for this – for example, special anchors, mounting rails, or additional reinforcements behind the drywall? I would appreciate detailed advice on the procedure, necessary materials, and any common mistakes to avoid. Thanks in advance!

The challenge of securely mounting IKEA Metod wall cabinets on drywall is common and requires careful planning. The most important principle is that the weight should not be supported solely by the drywall itself. The correct approach is to attach the cabinets either to existing wooden or metal studs behind the drywall or to reach them intentionally.

- Use an appropriate stud finder to locate the wall studs.
- When screwing directly into drywall, use special cavity anchors or heavy-duty anchors if no studs can be reached.
- If the stud positions are inconvenient, additional cross braces can be installed behind the drywall, which usually requires creating an opening.

Avoid common plastic anchors or simple expansion anchors, as these may fail over time under load. For secure load-bearing, metal anchors or bolt anchors are robust options if there is stability behind the drywall. Installing a mounting plate or wooden battens on the wall studs also significantly improves load distribution.

Metod cabinet on drywall: locate wooden or metal studs and screw directly into them. If this is not possible, use heavy-duty hollow wall anchors. Crossbars behind the drywall are ideal for high loads.

Regarding the topic "How do I securely mount IKEA Metod wall cabinets on drywall?" I would like to provide a brief step-by-step tutorial:

1. Stud finding: Use a reliable electric stud finder to accurately locate wooden or metal studs behind the drywall panel.
2. Preparation: Mark the desired height and position of the wall cabinets. Make sure the mounting points are positioned as much as possible on the studs.
3. Drilling: Drill holes for the screws directly into the studs. The drill hole should not be wider than the screw to ensure a firm hold.
4. Fasteners: Choose high-quality chipboard screws (at least 5x60 mm (0.2x2.4 inches)) for wooden studs or appropriate sheet metal screws for metal studs.
5. Installation: Securely fasten the hanging rails of the Metod cabinet series.
6. Load distribution: Ensure that the load is distributed indirectly via the hanging rail to avoid point loads.

Important: If no stud can be reached, I recommend using professional metal anchors (e.g. molly bolts) with sufficient load capacity or adapting the substructure, as drywall alone cannot support the load permanently.

I really appreciate the emphasis here on the importance of stud-finding. It helped me a lot some time ago because I was uncertain whether the cabinets would hold. Although this issue can be frustrating since you can’t just drill anywhere in the wall, with patience it works out. I was also hesitant to cut large openings in the drywall, but last month I gathered the courage to install a horizontal brace—and the result was very sturdy.

Therefore, I would recommend not relying solely on quick fixes but taking the time to understand the wall structure. Those who don’t do this risk unnecessary expenses or extra work for corrections.

I think it’s great that the importance of stud finding is highlighted here.

I agree. Additionally, I want to point out that besides locating the studs, it is essential to know the maximum weight of the loaded Metod cabinet series. According to IKEA specifications, the weight per wall cabinet is about 20–25 kilograms (44–55 pounds) plus contents. Plan for at least 40–50 kilograms (88–110 pounds) load capacity per cabinet. Undersized wall plugs will cause long-term damage to the wall.

Another tip: Clean the drill holes from dust before inserting the wall plugs to prevent slipping. This significantly improves adhesion.
