Bladi70Hello everyone,
I’m moving into a shared apartment soon and want to get an IKEA PAX wardrobe for my room. Since rooms in shared apartments are often not very large, I’m looking for models from the PAX series that are especially suitable for shared rooms in terms of size, flexibility, and value for money. I’m also interested in which interior configurations work best — like shelves, hanging rods, or maybe drawers?
Do you have experience with which PAX models you would recommend if you need as much storage space as possible in a small area and also want to stay flexible in case you move? Are there versions that are particularly practical for shared rooms because of their dimensions or design?
I’m looking forward to your advice!

Hello Bladi70,
I understand that you’re looking for a PAX wardrobe that fits into a usually smaller shared apartment room but is also flexible enough to accommodate changing needs. The PAX series is quite versatile. For smaller rooms, wardrobes with a width of 50 or 75 cm (20 or 30 inches) are recommended because they are simple and space-saving.
For interior fittings in shared rooms, it often makes sense to use a combination of a hanging rail and adjustable shelves. This way, you can store both hanging clothes and folded items efficiently. Drawers are great if you also want to keep underwear or smaller items separate.
If you know the space is very tight, models with sliding doors are an alternative so you don’t need much room to open them. However, these are usually more expensive.
I hope this helps!

Hey Bladi70,
if you live in a shared apartment, it’s also a good idea not to choose a closet that’s too large. A 75cm (30 inch) PAX doesn’t feel overwhelming but still offers plenty of storage space. Bonus: there are many combination options.
My tip: don’t go for too many drawers, as that can get expensive quickly – better choose shelves instead, which you can use flexibly for clothes or books. And when guests come over, being able to quickly hide things behind doors is definitely a big plus 😉.

Are there height options available for IKEA PAX as well? Often, rooms in shared apartments are rather low – I don’t want anything that goes all the way up to the ceiling because I’m not sure if I will be able to modify or extend it later.
And what about the depth? The standard PAX models are 58 cm (23 inches) deep, but I have seen shallower versions too. Does that make sense for small shared apartment rooms?
Sure, the PAX comes in different heights: approximately 201 cm (79 inches) and 236 cm (93 inches) are the standard sizes. For shared apartments, I usually recommend the 201 cm (79 inches) high wardrobe, as it’s more comfortable with lower ceilings and everything is easier to reach.
There aren’t really shallower models; the 58 cm (23 inches) depth is standard. If you have very limited space, you can work with shorter wardrobes and clever interior fittings.
