ᐅ IKEA Metod Tools for Assembling the Kitchen: What Really Matters

harunruHello everyone,
I’m about to assemble my new IKEA Metod kitchen and would like to discuss which tools are truly essential for the build.
Although IKEA’s assembly instructions are quite detailed, I’m wondering which tools you really shouldn’t skimp on and which might be unnecessary or just take up space. Especially with Metod kitchens, the modular design and different cabinet types bring some specific considerations.
I’m interested in:
- Which tools should definitely be on hand?
- Are there any special tools that make the assembly significantly easier?
- What are common mistakes caused by using the wrong tools?
I would really appreciate targeted experiences and recommendations so I can start well prepared. Thanks!

Which tools should you definitely have on hand? So, this is the most important question for me! Especially with IKEA METOD, you don’t need a full professional toolbox right away. Personally, I would say:
- Cordless drill/driver (40 Nm (30 ft-lb) should be more than enough)
- Phillips and flathead screwdrivers in different sizes
- Spirit level (good mood comes free of charge 😉)
- Tape measure

Is there any special tool that makes assembly much easier? An angle drill attachment for your cordless drill is a real game changer when working in tight spots. A rubber mallet also helps to gently fit parts together.
Regarding mistakes: Over-tightening screws or inaccurate alignment causes trouble, so it’s better to double-check.
So, pack the cordless drill and spirit level in your toolbox first — the rest is just nice to have! Good luck 😉

Over-tightening screws or inaccurate alignment causes problemsThis brings me to a critical point. I often see cordless drills being presented as a cure-all in furniture assembly, but especially with IKEA Metod, torque control is very important. Applying too much force can damage the particleboard or fittings.
Therefore, it is important to clearly differentiate:
- A cordless drill with adjustable torque is useful
- Alternatively, don’t underestimate a good set of manual screwdrivers

What are common mistakes caused by using the wrong tools?Besides over-tightening and damaging screws, using the wrong measuring tape—for example, a cheap metal tape with too much play—is often the cause of fitting problems. Precise measuring before and during assembly is essential.
In summary, I see it as a combination of using the right tools and very careful execution. What may seem “simple,” even with instructions, requires thoughtful handling.
I would like to add a practical guide here that really helps with many Metod kitchens:
1. Preparation
- Check all parts against the packing list right before starting assembly.
- Sort screws and fittings so you don’t have to search for them during the work.
2. Tools to have ready
- Cordless drill with torque adjustment (as already mentioned)
- Screwdrivers: Phillips PH2 and PH1, flathead screwdriver for dowels
- Level
- Measuring tape and pencil
- Rubber or plastic mallet
3. Assembly procedure
- Always assemble cabinets loosely first and insert at least two screws per connection before tightening everything fully.
- When installing base cabinets and countertops, pay close attention to exact alignment (use a level).
- Consider mounting hinges and doors at the end to avoid damage.
4. Common mistakes
- Tightening screws too strongly or too early: risk of warping the particle boards.
- Inaccurate measurements lead to fitting issues and alignment errors.
- Incorrect assembly sequence can unnecessarily complicate the installation.
Following these steps can help structure the work better, saving time and stress.
If you have any questions about specific steps, feel free to ask.
