Hello everyone,
I recently assembled a Billy shelf from IKEA, and after some time, I have been experiencing issues with the connecting fittings. They seem to break very easily, which quickly reduces the stability of the shelf.
I’m interested in knowing: What can be done if the connecting fittings on Billy shelves break? Are there ways to repair, replace, or even use better alternatives that last longer?
I’ve heard that some people replace the fittings with different materials or reinforce them somehow. What are your experiences or recommendations? Thanks in advance!

A practical solution is to replace the original connectors with metal connectors, which are available from specialized suppliers.Exactly! That’s how I did it too, and the shelf is still rock solid today! 🙂
Don’t get discouraged, anyone can do this!

BASTIANTI10 Jan 2017 08:47For everyone familiar with the problem of furniture connectors: sometimes the installation itself is the cause. Connection pieces often break when too much force is applied in one spot.
I recommend securing the components with moderate pressure during assembly and avoiding overtightening. If something does break, epoxy glue can often be used to make good repairs before buying new parts.

The second time I was more careful, but unfortunately the parts still don’t hold. Epoxy glue sounds interesting—could I really consider that a permanent solution, or is it more of a temporary fix?
That's great that you’re helping each other out here! 🙂
Regarding epoxy glue: if applied carefully, it can be really strong!
I also use it for repairs on shelves and furniture. The key is to make sure the broken surfaces are thoroughly cleaned and free of dust. Then the adhesive bonds very well. That’s how I saved the joints of my Billy shelves, and now the shelf is holding up perfectly again! Keep it up, everyone!
