Hello everyone,

I am currently assembling my new IKEA Besta cabinet but have run into a problem that is quite confusing: the pre-drilled holes in the panels do not align. Specifically, when attaching the side panels, the holes do not line up with the dowel holes but seem to be offset. This makes it very difficult to put the cabinet together, and the screws don’t fit properly.

Has anyone experienced this issue? Is this a typical manufacturing defect, or am I fundamentally doing something wrong during assembly? I have followed the instructions carefully and sorted the panels according to the plan. These are standard Besta units, no custom sizes.

What can I do if the holes don’t align? Should I try to drill new holes on the right side, or are there better solutions to still connect the cabinet securely and ensure its stability?

I would appreciate any constructive tips and shared experiences!

If the drill holes don’t match, first check whether you are using the correct panels. Sometimes the other side fits better. If you are sure, you can carefully widen the holes, but they should fit precisely. It is best to use a drill stand for accurate holes.

Hello apolinarfo,

I am familiar with this issue, as the IKEA Besta is often manufactured with very tight tolerances. The most important thing is to stay calm and proceed methodically:

- Check whether all parts actually belong to your model; sometimes there are model variants with slightly different drill hole positions.
- Measure the distances between the holes with a caliper or ruler and compare them to the instructions.
- If there is a misalignment, I advise against randomly drilling new holes. It is better to use small cover plates or brackets for reinforcement, which you can mount over the problematic areas.
- If you decide to drill additional holes, be sure to use a drilling template and a small drill bit to achieve a clean result.
- Sometimes IKEA provides replacement parts or can exchange the faulty part, so it’s worth calling customer service as well.

I hope this helps you.

From a technical perspective, it is essential in such cases to first systematically compare the construction manual with the respective components. Fit issues often occur when panels are swapped or parts are installed incorrectly.

The pre-drilled holes in the panels do not align. Specifically, during the assembly of the side walls, the drill holes do not match the dowel holes but appear to be offset.

If the inspection reveals a manufacturing defect, it is advisable to replace the affected part. Alternatively, for slightly offset holes, a new hole can be drilled using a drilling guide. It is important to:

- Measure the exact drilling positions
- Use a drill jig or drill stand
- Avoid excessive material damage to maintain joint stability

Additionally, using corner brackets in the inner corner can help when the dowel connection does not fit precisely. This method increases load capacity and compensates for minor deviations.

Drilling without a template or guide increases the risk of crooked holes and unstable joints.

Conclusion: A systematic approach and precise measurement techniques are crucial to successfully complete the assembly.

I had a similar issue recently and understand how frustrating it can be. Especially with these types of assembly products, you expect everything to fit perfectly. I found it helpful to take a step back at first and not get discouraged during the assembly.

It is true that carefully re-drilling is an option, but I felt that the panel lost some stability as a result – so be very cautious if you decide to do this.

That worked really well for me after I contacted IKEA. I received support and was able to have the faulty part sent to me free of charge.

If the cabinet is important to you, I can only recommend going through the replacement process. However, if you are under time pressure, small improvised reinforcements can still help. Keep your spirits up, you can do it!

Regarding the issue with misaligned drilling holes in the IKEA Besta, I would like to add the following:

Basically, it often comes down to the order of assembly and careful positioning of the panels. Even slight deviations when marking or pre-drilling can affect the accuracy of the fit.

This is the best and most sustainable advice.

In addition, I recommend lightly dipping the dowels in wood glue before inserting them, which makes the connection stronger and compensates for small tolerances.

If re-drilling is unavoidable, make sure to hold the drill bit precisely perpendicular to the surface, and it is better to pre-drill slightly smaller holes first, then gradually use larger drill bits if needed. This helps prevent material chipping.

You can also use clamps to hold the parts securely during screwing. This prevents shifting during assembly.
