Hello everyone,
I have an Ikea Brimnes shelving unit that has some minor damage, such as small scratches, slight dents, or tiny surface chips. Since I don’t want to replace the entire piece, I’m especially interested in how to repair these minor damages myself in the most effective and gentle way possible.
Which materials and tools would you recommend? Are specialized repair kits for wood or furniture sufficient, or is it better to use filler putty, sandpaper, and paint?
Tips on the procedure, such as specific steps or techniques, would also be helpful, as well as potential pitfalls or things to avoid in order not to ruin the typical BRIMNES design.
I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

Hello salodeo!
Small scratches and dents on BRIMNES furniture can happen easily – but don’t worry, they are quite simple to fix.
I recommend a furniture repair kit with wax or wood sticks in matching colors. The application is straightforward, almost meditative: rub the wax into the scratch, wipe off the excess, and you’re done. If it’s a dent, you can also slightly moisten the area and use a steam iron over it to make the wood/metal swell back a bit.
The key is always to match the color as closely as possible – BRIMNES has a matte white finish that not every repair stick will match perfectly. Testing on an inconspicuous spot helps!
Good luck, and don’t get discouraged – your furniture deserves a loving makeover! 😉

Hello salodeo,
I’m happy to help you repair minor damage to your BRIMNES. The surface is usually made of a thin melamine coating or laminate, which requires special care because it can soften or become rough easily.
Recommended materials:
- A furniture repair kit with color-matched wax or plastic fillers
- Fine sandpaper (e.g., 400 grit) for smoothing minor unevenness
- A matte clear varnish or sealer to finish, preventing color differences
The procedure:
1. Clean and dry the area
2. Carefully work the wax or filler into the damaged spot
3. Gently sand off any excess
4. Seal to protect against moisture
Be careful not to overwork the damaged area, as the thin coating can be easily damaged. If the laminate has chipped off, you can level the surface with colored wood filler, then carefully varnish it afterwards.
If you like, I can explain specific techniques or recommend products.

Hello salodeo,
To properly repair minor damage on Ikea BRIMNES furniture, it is important first to identify the exact type of damage, as melamine resin coatings are special and react differently than painted solid wood.
Here is a step-by-step guide for the most common minor damages:
- Scratches:
- Clean the surface gently to remove dust and grease.
- Use a repair wax stick in a matching color, carefully melting the wax into the scratch.
- Remove excess wax with a plastic spatula.
- After the wax tip has dried, lightly sand with very fine sandpaper (grit 600-800).
- Apply a matt clear coat with a brush to seal the surface.
- Dents:
- If the dent is on chipboard-based material, you can steam it by placing a slightly damp cloth over the dent and applying a hot iron. This swells the wood fibers and reduces the dent.
- If this is not enough, use colored wood filler, then sand and paint.
- Chips:
- Remove any sharp edges first.
- Use wood filler to fill in the missing material.
- After drying, sand and seal with matching paint or lacquer.
Important: Work carefully with these pieces, as the chipboard is soft and the coating sensitive. Always sand gently to avoid further damaging the surface.
Do you have mostly many small scratches or just a few larger areas? Depending on the amount, I would prioritize the repairs differently.

Mostly, there are small scratches and slight dents, no large chips. A few corners are a bit damaged, where the finish is already starting to come off slightly.
The idea of using a wax repair stick sounds interesting. Where would be the best place to get those? IKEA doesn’t offer anything like that themselves, right? So far, I have looked for such furniture repair kits at hardware stores, but there are many different types available.
Also, I’m wondering if applying clear varnish would affect the matte surface? I’d rather avoid creating a shiny spot that would stand out on the surface.
