Hello everyone,

I have an Ikea Brimnes shelving unit that has some minor damage, such as small scratches, slight dents, or tiny surface chips. Since I don’t want to replace the entire piece, I’m especially interested in how to repair these minor damages myself in the most effective and gentle way possible.

Which materials and tools would you recommend? Are specialized repair kits for wood or furniture sufficient, or is it better to use filler putty, sandpaper, and paint?

Tips on the procedure, such as specific steps or techniques, would also be helpful, as well as potential pitfalls or things to avoid in order not to ruin the typical BRIMNES design.

I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

Hello salodeo,

Here are some details in response to your questions:

1. Repair wax: These kits are usually available at well-stocked DIY stores or specialty furniture accessory retailers. They come in various colors, and you can often mix the waxes to get an exact match. Note: There are both water-based and solvent-based options – water-based ones are generally easier and safer for home use.

2. Clear varnish: For Brimnes, a matte acrylic varnish is recommended, as it is almost invisible. So-called "silk matte" finishes are not too shiny and preserve the original appearance almost completely. Application should be done with a fine brush in thin layers.

3. Procedure for corners and chipped veneer: If the veneer comes off, you can fill the areas with wood or plastic filler, then sand smooth and color match before varnishing.

One tip: Always test a small area first when color matching, especially with white tones, as this is crucial.

If you like, I can provide a color mixing formula, as long as you have an open set.

Hello salodeo,

For minor damage on BRIMNES furniture, I’ve found the following helpful:

- For scratches: wax sticks or repair wax, as already recommended. Very effective because they are flexible and easy to apply.
- Dents: Using a damp cloth and an iron often works – but it’s important not to use too much heat and to steam briefly.
- Chips: Use wood filler, then sand with very fine sandpaper (600 grit or higher), and finally paint with matte finish.

In my experience, the most important thing is to do the repair in several thin layers to keep the result looking natural and avoid visible paint edges.

Also helpful: after the repair, use furniture polish with wax to slightly even out the color and visually protect the area.

Good luck!

The idea of using a wax crayon sounds interesting, where is the best place to get these?

If you ask me, salodeo: a hardware store is definitely the better choice. There are tons of sets available online, but for a small repair, the good old wooden color crayon (or wax crayon) from the hardware store usually does the job.

And regarding clear varnish: matte, matte, matte—otherwise it looks like paint smudges. Definitely not glossy!

Have fun with it – I usually apply too much wax and then polish off the excess with an old kitchen cloth. It’s a bit like giving your furniture a spa treatment. 😉

Additional information:

The material used for BRIMNES furniture is particleboard with a melamine coating, which is generally not very flexible. Minor surface scratches can be treated superficially, but deeper damage is more challenging since the coating does not regenerate.

Therefore, I recommend:

- Thorough cleaning before repair (use alcohol-free cleaners)
- Use of furniture wax or color-matched wax sticks (matte, not glossy)
- For chipped melamine coatings: apply filler sparingly, as it can alter the appearance
- After treatment, a thin layer of matte water-based clear coat can help without producing a strong sheen

Please note: Any repair should first be tested on a small, inconspicuous area to avoid color and texture differences.

There is no perfect 100% match for melamine coatings, so the key is to blend the repair unobtrusively rather than completely eliminating the damage.

For minor damages on BRIMNES furniture, I recommend furniture repair kits with wax sticks or wood filler.

Dents can be raised using a damp cloth and an iron.

It is best to paint with matte paint to avoid differences in gloss.

Definitely not glossy!

That reassures me. The matte finish is really important; otherwise, it stands out immediately.

Depending on the extent, I would prioritize the repair differently.

In my case, where there are mainly small scratches and a few minor dents, would you also use a furniture polish with wax? Or is repairing with a wax stick and smooth paint enough?

I’m asking because I’m a bit worried about making the spot stand out even more visually through the wrong touch-up.
