Hello everyone, I am planning to make my !Ikea METOD kitchen cabinets in the children’s room as child-friendly as possible, especially by adding safety features, since our little kids like to climb and touch everything. My question is: Which effective and practical safety measures, such as soft-close locks, childproof locks on drawers, or anti-tip devices, can you specifically recommend to ensure the cabinets pose no risk to children but remain easy to use? It would be great if you could also share experiences with certain products, installation methods, or even tips for retrofitting METOD cabinets. Thanks in advance!

Hello ix-jan61, to secure the Ikea METOD cabinets, I recommend the following measures:

- Install anti-tip brackets on the wall to prevent the cabinets from tipping over.
- Use magnetic or mechanical child safety locks on cabinet doors and drawers, as these are discreet and make access more difficult.
- Use soft-close hinges or damping systems to prevent injuries from slamming doors.

Most of these components are compatible with METOD and can be easily retrofitted. When choosing child safety locks, make sure they are easy for adults to open but secure for children. Additionally, I recommend firmly anchoring the cabinets, as the main safety risk is often tipping.

I would like to add to this point because I consider it particularly important. Magnetic child safety locks have the advantage of being invisible, so the furniture design remains intact. They are also less prone to malfunction compared to some click locks. It is important to obtain a suitable magnetic opener, as the cabinets cannot be opened without a tool otherwise.

Furthermore, you should make sure that all safety devices are child-friendly – meaning not only safe against accidental opening, but also easy to clean and durable for repeated use. Some parents also use corner protectors or edge guards for cabinet edges, which can be quite sharp on METOD, unfortunately.

Anti-tip wall anchors are mandatory! Always equip doors with child safety locks. Soft-close makes a big difference – no more pinched fingers.

That's exactly what I thought! 🙂 The soft-close hinges on our METOD cabinets are the best decision we made! Additionally, I installed these very simple plastic catches that can be reopened without tools. Our kids are curious, so this prevents them from just pulling the doors open.

And the anti-tip protection? Indispensable! It takes a bit more effort to install, but it looks great and gives me complete peace of mind that nothing can tip over. I highly recommend it – go for it! It’s definitely worth doing safely.
