JOELNEOHello everyone, I have an IKEA Billy bookcase and I’m annoyed by some scratches on the doors and side panels. Although most of them are just surface-level, they are still bothersome and quite noticeable in some areas. My question is: What methods or products are available to make scratches on Billy bookcases as invisible as possible, without repainting the furniture or damaging it further? I would like to know which materials work, whether repair kits from hardware stores can be used, and which tips are truly helpful to keep the surface looking good. Thanks in advance for your help!
Hello Joelneo, the repair of scratches on IKEA BILLY shelves generally depends a lot on the material – most of the time it is particle board with a foil or melamine coating. For superficial scratches, wax sticks or furniture repair kits designed specifically for wood and laminate surfaces work particularly well. It is important to choose a color that matches the shelf as closely as possible, otherwise the repair spots will remain visible. If the scratches are a bit deeper, you can try fine sandpaper, but you need to be careful not to damage the coating further.

Wax sticks or furniture repair kits are particularly suitable for superficial scratchesThat’s a good start, but to provide targeted advice, it’s important to first know whether your BILLY shelf has a melamine resin coating or a thin foil laminate surface – this greatly affects the approach.
For very fine scratches on laminate surfaces, I recommend using gentle polishing products specifically designed for furniture laminates. Alternatively, furniture polish waxes can sometimes work as well; when applied correctly, they visually fill in scratches and scatter light, making them less noticeable.
If the surface is matte, I suggest using repair markers, which come in various shades. These can be applied precisely and then gently wiped with a cloth. The color should dry thoroughly to avoid it rubbing off quickly.
How large are the scratches, and where exactly are they located? This information could help to provide more specific advice.
Thanks in advance for the initial suggestions! Most of the scratches are on the side panels, where the rounded plastic handle rubs against the keychain when opening — so they are mostly small to medium scratches, some of which only appear as dull lines. The surface is a type of white-coated particleboard with melamine resin. Therefore, I think sanding is not ideal, as it might damage the laminate.
I would like to know if so-called furniture touch-up pens from hardware stores are a worthwhile investment here, or if there are better products specifically designed for melamine resin-coated surfaces. I am also unsure how to apply these products correctly to avoid color mismatches.
If anyone knows other methods that also work well visually on white BILLY shelves, please share.

Hello Joelneo, your detailed description is very helpful. Regarding furniture touch-up markers: yes, they are often a good and quickly accessible solution if you find a shade that matches the white of your BILLY shelf surface well. However, it is important to use the marker very sparingly and only on small spots, then wipe off any excess material with a soft cloth before it dries. There are also special repair kits for melamine and laminate surfaces, which typically include a paste and several color options. These can achieve better results if a single marker is not enough.
If you want to carefully conceal visible scratches, you can also apply a small amount of furniture polish or wax. This often masks dull scratches elegantly because it changes the way light reflects. I advise against rubbing too hard or for too long, as this can damage the coating. I have had good experiences with wax repair sticks from reputable brands, which you can polish with a soft cloth after application.

You can try improving the gloss level on the damaged area using a microfiber cloth and special furniture polishing products, which can visually reduce minor dull scratches.
If the scratches are fine, you can also use a white wax stick, sometimes called "plastic repair wax." These waxes partially fill the scratches and help to even out the color.
I recommend always testing on an inconspicuous spot before applying, and if needed, apply multiple thin layers with light polishing in between.
How often is your BILLY shelf used? This will determine whether you can afford to spend more effort on the repair or if a quick fix is preferable.
