MeomauI have some old Ikea Metod cabinet fronts in my kitchen that I would like to clean without damaging the surface or finish. These fronts are made of MDF with a foil coating, which can be sensitive to the wrong cleaning products. My question is: What is the best way to clean Ikea Metod fronts, especially when there is grease, fingerprints, and light dirt buildup? Which cleaning agents or methods are suitable to protect the surface and prevent long-term damage such as peeling of the foil or dulling? Are there any tips on which products to avoid and how to proceed when dealing with tougher stains?
The following procedure is recommended for cleaning old Ikea Metod fronts with a foil surface:
- First, remove dust and loose dirt particles using a soft microfiber cloth and lukewarm water.
- For grease stains or heavier dirt, add a few drops of mild, neutral dish soap to the water.
- Lightly dampen the sponge or cloth to avoid soaking the surface, as moisture can soften the foil.
- Avoid direct use of harsh or abrasive cleaners, aggressive solvents (e.g., alcohol, acetone), or scouring agents, as they can damage or discolor the foil.
- After cleaning, wipe the surfaces with a dry, soft cloth to remove water spots and any remaining moisture.
This method is effective and protects the delicate surfaces.

Avoid direct use of harsh or abrasive cleaners, aggressive solvents (e.g., alcohol, acetone), or scouring agents, as they can damage or discolor the film. That’s helpful, thank you! What about vinegar-based cleaners or baking soda as home remedies? There are always contradictory opinions, and of course, I want to avoid damaging the film. The water-to-dish soap ratio is also of interest—should it be very little dish soap or a slightly concentrated mix? I’m aiming for a thorough yet gentle cleaning.

What about vinegar cleaner or baking soda as home remedies? I would not recommend vinegar cleaner or baking soda for Ikea Metod fronts with foil surfaces. Vinegar is too acidic and can damage the foil, especially with heavy or long-term use. Baking soda is mildly abrasive and can scratch the surface. It is better to use mild cleaning agents that are specifically designed for coated furniture.
For dish soap: 1-2 drops per liter (about 1 quart) of water are usually sufficient. It is important that the solution is not too concentrated to avoid damaging the foil and to minimize residues.
After cleaning, wipe the fronts with a damp cloth to remove any dish soap residue, then dry them thoroughly. This keeps the surface clean and preserves its protective layer.
