ᐅ How can I build an Ikea BESTA unit as a shoe cabinet with ventilation and storage space?

Laurebo0Hello everyone, I am planning to modify an IKEA Besta shelving unit to use it as a shoe cabinet with good ventilation while still providing enough storage space. It is important to me that the shoes do not become too damp and that no odors develop, as there is some humidity in my home.
I have already considered adding small ventilation slots or possibly using a thin back panel with a perforated pattern. Small shelves with air gaps might also be a good idea.
How have you adapted your BESTA as a shoe cabinet? What tips do you have for ventilation and storage? Are there better materials or accessories that I could use?
I look forward to your expert advice and any creative ideas on how to make the shelf as functional as possible without changing the visual design of the BESTA too much.

I have already considered whether to integrate small ventilation slots or possibly use a thin back panel with a perforated pattern. That is basically a sensible approach.
I specifically recommend:
- Using perforated or drilled back panels made of wood or MDF to improve air circulation
- Installing small ventilation grilles at the lower and upper parts of the cabinet
- Using spacers for the shelves to allow air circulation behind them
- Using moisture-resistant materials for the back panel to prevent mold
Since BESTA does not come with ventilation holes by default, you will need to drill them yourself or get suitable back panels. Make sure to maintain stability so that the load-bearing capacity of the cabinet is not compromised.

Also: How important is ventilation really if you control odors and moisture by regularly airing out the room and taking care of your shoes?
Would it perhaps make more sense to incorporate activated charcoal inserts or desiccants inside the cabinet itself, rather than heavily modifying the BESTA?
Ventilation mainly helps with shoes that generate a lot of moisture; otherwise, its effectiveness is limited.
A good solution is to equip the shelves with perforated insert panels to promote air circulation directly between the shoes.
Additionally, you can use breathable shoe boxes or fabric bags that help organize the storage space while allowing ventilation.
Also, integrating small ventilation grilles into the back panel often noticeably improves airflow without affecting the overall appearance.

Could it possibly be more effective to integrate activated carbon inserts or desiccants directly into the cabinet instead of extensively modifying the BESTA? That’s a good point, thank you. A combination of passive ventilation and active odor/moisture control sounds reasonable.
I want to keep the appearance as unchanged as possible, so I’m cautious about large vents or visible slits.
Can anyone share advice on how to install small, discreet ventilation openings that still allow enough fresh air? Also, how do you effectively use desiccants inside the cabinet?
What would be the ideal size for these openings? And where are the best positions (bottom, top, back)?
