ᐅ My KALLAX is stuck after installing the carpet and won't slide back.

Lu-lo67Hello everyone,
I have a rather specific problem with my IKEA Kallax shelf, which I recently assembled right after installing a new carpet. Specifically, I aligned and fixed the shelf on the freshly laid carpet. Since then, I haven’t been able to push it back or adjust it because it somehow “sticks” or gets stuck. Even when I try to manually push it backward, it doesn’t move an inch.
The floor is level, and the carpet itself isn’t very thick, but it is probably slightly thicker than the previous flooring. I wonder if the sticking might be related to the friction between the bottom of the shelf and the carpet, or if something went wrong with the positioning surface.
Has anyone experienced a similar issue or knows how to make the shelf movable again without having to completely dismantle it? I would also appreciate tips on how to prevent this in the future, especially regarding the combination of carpet and Kallax.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

I’m familiar with your issue, as I once set up a KALLAX on new carpet myself. The sticking usually happens for two reasons: 1) The carpet has a higher pile height than the previous floor, which makes sliding more difficult. 2) The KALLAX rests directly on the carpet edges, which can grip slightly.
My advice would be:
1. Check the feet of the KALLAX: Do you have felt pads or plastic gliders installed underneath? If not, definitely add them.
2. Consider raising the base with a thin chipboard or a flat board under the shelf to make it easier to move.
3. When setting it up, avoid pressing the shelf fully onto the carpet, as this reduces its mobility.
If the shelf is already fixed in place, usually just a small adjustment is needed, like lifting it and adding gliders.
I hope this helps!

The new carpet needs time to settle, especially if it was stapled or glued down.

Even when I try to push it back manually, it doesn’t move a millimeter. It could also be that the base of the KALLAX is effectively blocked by small unevenness or lint on the carpet. Have you checked whether there might be any foreign objects between the shelving unit and the floor? There may also be mechanical binding if the shelf has slightly pressed into the carpet due to its weight.
I would also suggest checking whether the structure itself is assembled correctly, as damage or a warped board can cause it to jam, which becomes especially noticeable on a carpeted surface.
Hello Lu-lo67,
I would like to add that this problem often occurs when the KALLAX is placed directly on the floor and is too close due to the carpet thickness. That’s why I usually put my shelves on small furniture gliders or casters when I have carpeted floors. The elevation helps reduce pressure and allows more mobility.
Additionally, I have experienced several times that the KALLAX shelves get stuck due to slight distortions during assembly. A tip is to lift the shelf slightly, tilt it a bit, and then carefully push it back – this often helps avoid it getting stuck.
If you have placed the shelf against a wall on both sides, the clearance can also be reduced. So check whether the walls are straight or if the carpet changes the distance slightly when putting the shelf in place.
I hope my tips help you! 🙂

Even when I try to push it manually a little backward, it doesn’t move a single millimeter.Good morning! I’d like to give you a brief guide on how to proceed:
1. Lift the shelf: Slightly lift the front of the KALLAX to detach it from the floor.
2. Check the underlay: Place thin wooden or plastic sheets (e.g., furniture gliders or thin chipboard) under the feet or shelf to create a firm and smooth base.
3. Adjust the position: Now the shelf should slide more easily on the level surface.
4. Final fixing: Make sure not to use screws or brackets that fully secure the shelf if you want to keep some flexibility.
Using a stable base is especially important on carpeted floors, as the friction surface is otherwise too high. We also recommend distributing the weight evenly so the shelf does not sink into the carpet.
Good luck!
