Hello everyone, I would like to know who among you uses the IKEA Kallax shelving unit as a storage solution for beverages in the basement and which aspects you paid particular attention to. Specifically, I’m interested in how you prepared the shelving for storing beer, wine, and mineral water, for example regarding stability, humidity, or accessibility. Are there any useful modifications or additions you would recommend to better adapt the shelves to the requirements of a basement beverage storage? Thanks in advance for your tips!

I have been using Kallax as drink shelves in the basement for some time. Stability and air circulation are especially important to me. Since Kallax is made of wood-based panels, I make sure the basement is well ventilated to prevent moisture build-up and swelling of the shelves. Additionally, I have attached small wooden strips at the front of some compartments to prevent bottles from tipping when being pulled out.

A useful addition are also insert shelves or plastic boxes that allow you to divide the compartments or better secure the bottles. Moreover, for heavier drinks, I would definitely recommend securing the unit to the wall to avoid accidents.

I have Kallax in the basement for beer bottles. Important: always place it horizontally to avoid putting any load on the material and consider securing it to the wall for safety.

Kallax is suitable for light bottle racks. For heavier contents, it is advisable to reinforce the shelves and ensure proper humidity control.

Using Kallax as a basement shelf for drinks is fine. It is important to have dust protection and avoid direct contact with the floor. You might consider lining the compartments with plastic boxes.

I’d like to pick up on that: moisture in the basement is crucial. I use a moisture meter and ventilate regularly. Additionally, I have placed Kallax shelves on feet, not directly on the floor, which prevents water damage in case of standing water.

Also: bottles that are used frequently are placed slightly at the front of the shelf for easier access.
