Hello everyone, I have a Kallax shelf from Ikea that I have placed on a very soft carpet. Unfortunately, the shelf is always uneven as a result, meaning it wobbles and is not stable. I suspect the soft surface is the issue because the carpet has cushioning, causing the shelf to sink more in some spots than in others.

So, my question is: What options are there to stabilize a Kallax shelf on a soft carpet so that it no longer wobbles or stands unevenly? Are there special base plates, feet, or other tricks that could improve its stability? I would appreciate any experiences and tips!

Hello fore48, with such a soft carpet this is often the case – the shelf can basically "sink" into the carpet and then become uneven. I simply stuck small thick felt pads under the feet and placed it on a thin wooden board. The wooden board distributes the weight better, and the felt pads protect the board from scratches. Result: no more wobbling, and the shelf stands much more stable 🙂 Maybe such a DIY base could be an easy solution for you as well. Good luck!

The issue is well known: a Kallax unit on a soft carpet usually becomes unstable because the flooring distributes pressure unevenly. My recommendation is to place sturdy wooden or MDF panels under the entire shelving unit. Ideally, use two panels of equal size – one under the front legs and one under the back legs of the unit – and secure them to prevent slipping. Alternatively, adjustable furniture feet can be used to level the unit individually. This even has the advantage of compensating for minor unevenness.

Hello fore48, I would like to provide a more detailed explanation of why this issue occurs more often with soft carpet: a Kallax shelf unit has relatively small contact areas on its feet, which can sink into the carpet. Because the carpet compresses significantly, this creates an uneven load distribution that causes the unit to tilt. In addition, slight movements can lead to rocking.

Possible solutions are:

1. Use a larger, sturdy base plate (wood, MDF, or even a thin plywood board) that distributes the weight more evenly.
2. Furniture feet with rubber pads or adjustable-height feet to compensate for unevenness and adjust the height.
3. Fix washers or mounting brackets that prevent the unit from tipping over.

The most important thing is to increase the contact surface of the shelf unit on the carpet; otherwise, the wobbling will continue.

Place a wooden board underneath, level the rest with rubber furniture feet. Done.

I had the same problem with my Kallax. What helped me was making the carpet under the shelf thinner by inserting a kind of firm base. I cut a foam board and placed it underneath – it worked surprisingly well. 🙂 Sometimes you just have to approach problems creatively!
