ᐅ KALLAX as a Workshop Shelf – Should We Secure It for Heavy Loads?

Hello everyone,

I have been considering using an IKEA KALLAX shelf as a workshop shelf in my garage for some time. It will mainly hold tools, small machines, and materials – so it will sometimes be quite heavily loaded. Now I am wondering whether I need to secure the KALLAX to the wall to ensure stability and safety for this kind of use, or if it is sufficient to place the shelf freestanding.

Does anyone have experience with how much weight the individual compartments can bear without the shelf tipping over or sagging? And how effective are wall mountings for this type of shelf? Are there any special fixing methods or recommendations I should consider to minimize the risk of tipping or damage to the shelf?

I look forward to your expert advice and opinions!

I can confirm from experience that the KALLAX unit usually stands stable on its own with light to medium loads. For heavy or uneven loads, securing it to the wall significantly increases safety.

Please note:
- KALLAX is not designed as a workshop shelf for attics or garages with heavy use and high loads.
- When attaching wall mounts, use the fixing points in the unit recommended by IKEA.
- Avoid placing loads right at the front edge of the shelves, as this increases the risk of tipping over.

Installing multiple units stacked on top of each other also increases the risk if they are not secured to the wall.

Additional information:

The official KALLAX product description states a maximum load of 13 kg per compartment with even distribution. This limit can be quickly exceeded in workshop use. Furthermore, the connections between the panels are mainly made with dowels and screws without metal reinforcement.

Therefore, wall mounting for heavier loads is not only recommended – it is almost essential for safety reasons. It significantly reduces the risk of tipping and protects people from accidents.

For wall mounting, a solid set of anchors and screws suitable for the wall type is recommended. Do not use standard anchors on drywall (plasterboard, gypsum board) walls.

Wall mounting is not a question if you put heavy items into the KALLAX. Just do it.

I have a KALLAX shelving unit factory-equipped with heavy boxes. It holds up, but only with wall mounting. Otherwise, the shelf quickly sags or tips over. Wall mounting is absolutely necessary.

I have been using KALLAX for years, also as a partial workshop shelf. I've never had any problems, but I load a maximum of 10 kg (22 lbs) per compartment and have secured it with wall brackets. Otherwise, I wouldn’t take the risk.

I recommend the following approach:
1. Estimate the total weight per shelf section.
2. Use sturdy brackets with metal screws in the upper areas.
3. Check whether the shelf can stand securely on its own; if necessary, use rubber feet or anti-slip pads.

Good morning everyone, and thank you for the feedback so far.

I have recalculated your weight estimates. I think I will be loading between 10 and 15 kg (22 to 33 lbs) per shelf section. I like the idea of anti-slip pads; they could also help minimize floor damage caused by movement.

I am also interested if anyone has recommendations on how to make the wall fixing as visually unobtrusive as possible. I don’t want to affect the appearance of the workspace too much.
