ᐅ Experience with KALLAX shelves next to old EXPEDIT units – color differences?

Hello everyone,

I have a somewhat specific question about furniture combinations: I own several old EXPEDIT shelves from IKEA, which I really appreciate and use regularly. Now I’ve noticed that I would like to add some KALLAX units as well—mainly because this new series is the successor to EXPEDIT and looks quite similar.

However, I have concerns about color differences. Does anyone have experience with how pronounced the color variations are between the old EXPEDIT shelves and the newer KALLAX units?

I’m asking especially because I plan to place the furniture pieces very close to each other in one room and want to achieve a as harmonious look as possible. It’s important for me to know whether the wood tones, white shades, or surface textures differ noticeably, or if these differences can be balanced out with some distance or suitable decor.

I would be very grateful for your experiences, tips, or concrete advice!

Just for your information: If you look very closely, you will notice the differences quite clearly. However, for everyday use, they are rather unnoticeable, as long as the shelves are not directly glued together.

If you choose white: Pay attention to the lighting conditions! KALLAX appears different under warm light than under cool light. This can either enhance or diminish the color difference.

It’s less important that the tones match exactly; the overall impression in the room matters more.

I completely agree with that. Many thanks for your detailed explanations.

That’s a good point. The room where the shelves will be placed mainly receives natural daylight, but in the evening there is very warm LED lighting. I’ll test how the colors appear under different light sources.

Does anyone have experience with cleverly combining the white KALLAX units with colored boxes to make the color difference less noticeable?

Colored boxes work well and draw attention to other color accents. This way, the difference in the base shelves is less noticeable.

Absolutely! Colored inserts or fabric boxes are great tools to personalize the look and visually blend different shades of white. Especially in an interesting mix, they can even help to make the minor color variations hardly noticeable.

I have furnished my living room with KALLAX units with colored boxes and placed older EXPEDIT elements next to them. You can only notice the difference upon very close inspection. The colored boxes draw the focus nicely.
