Hello everyone,
I am currently working on optimizing my Kallax shelves and am considering installing drawer inserts in the compartments to make them easier to use. My main question is: Which drawer inserts generally work best with Kallax, especially regarding stability, material quality, and ease of use?
I am particularly interested in inserts that are really durable for everyday use and do not start sticking or warping after a short time. I would appreciate recommendations on specific manufacturers, models, or material types, as well as any experiences with installation or modifications.
Thank you very much for your help!

Hello REBERU,
your question is very well formulated, and I really appreciate that you are considering everyday practicality. For the Kallax, two common types of drawer slides usually fit: either plastic or metal runners.
In my experience, plastic slides are often cheaper but tend to jam after extended use, especially if the slide is not installed precisely or if the drawer becomes somewhat heavier.
Metal runners are a bit more expensive but offer significantly more stability and smoother operation. It is also important that the slides are cut to size, as the shelving unit can vary slightly.
So, material quality and precise installation are crucial. Many recommend IKEA's own inserts, but there are also good third-party options, especially from furniture specialists.
If you like, I can also give you tips on proper installation!

Hello REBERU,
I can really understand how frustrating it is when drawer inserts stick or aren’t stable. I experienced the same until I switched to metal drawer slides.
I was nervous about whether the investment would be worth it, but they have been running smoothly for months now. Although the installation was a bit more involved at first, the result was definitely worth it. I would recommend prioritizing quality and not cutting corners to ensure long-term satisfaction.
If you like, I’m happy to share more about the products I used and how I made the adjustments.

I’m asking because I’ve seen some more affordable models that look quite suitable. Is the quality difference very significant, or is the day-to-day usability at least comparable during the first few months?

In short: Everyday usability with good plastic slides is quite comparable during the first few months. They are quieter and easier to install. However, under heavier load or frequent use, differences become noticeable quickly. Plastic tends to warp or stick when exposed to temperature changes and stress.
Metal slides usually maintain smooth operation longer—especially with frequent opening and closing. So if you use the drawers often or plan to store heavy items inside, upgrading to metal is worthwhile.
If you expect lighter use, a high-quality plastic insert can be a good compromise.
