Hello everyone, I am currently planning the installation of an IKEA Metod kitchen in my new build, where the walls are made of solid concrete. My question is how to securely and stably attach the Metod kitchen cabinets to the concrete walls so that they do not get damaged or come loose, even when fully loaded.

Which types of anchors and screws are recommended for this? Should I take any special preparations on the walls before installation, such as using specific drill bits, spacing the fixing points in a certain way, or any other tips to improve stability?

I want to avoid the cabinets starting to tilt or the fixings failing after a few months. Are there any experiences or best practices for how to best fix Metod cabinets to concrete? Thanks in advance for your feedback!

It is best to use heavy-duty anchors or concrete anchors with a diameter of at least 8 mm (5/16 inches). For drilling, use a hammer drill with a masonry bit. Mount the cabinets on the wall with a spacing of about 40 to 60 cm (16 to 24 inches) between them to ensure they hold securely.

Your question about how to securely attach IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets to concrete walls can be best addressed through thorough preparation. Concrete is a solid substrate where choosing the right fastening method is crucial to ensure long-lasting stability.

First, I recommend carefully assessing the wall thickness and material. Solid concrete (at least 15 cm thick (6 inches)) provides a sturdy base for heavy-duty anchors, whereas thinner structures might require alternative techniques.

Second, be sure to use high-quality anchors—preferably expansion anchors or metal toggle bolts with a minimum diameter of 8 mm (0.3 inches). Plastic anchors are suitable for lighter loads, but are generally not recommended here. Also, make sure the anchor length is sufficient to engage deeply into the concrete (at least 70 mm (2.8 inches)).

Third, for drilling: use a good rotary hammer drill or a hammer drill to create precise, clean holes without cracks. Dust protection and a powerful vacuum help keep the workspace clean. Using a hammer drill bit with a noise reduction system is ideal, especially for longer projects.

Fourth, importantly: fastening points should be located at load-bearing spots, such as concrete supports or areas where the load can be better distributed. For IKEA Metod, it is recommended to position the drill holes where the mounting rail for the wall cabinets will be attached. The mounting rail carries the load of the cabinets and distributes it evenly.

Finally, after installation, check for any play in the fixings and retighten screws if necessary. Especially with overlay fronts, load changes can sometimes cause slight loosening.

I would also like to know whether the concrete wall has a smooth surface or if an additional finish will be applied, as this can affect the fastening method.

That is correct. Additionally, I recommend using the Metod system’s mounting rail as a base because it distributes the load better and holds the cabinets more securely. Use at least M8 heavy-duty anchors suitable for concrete ceilings and walls.

Also make sure the anchor length is sufficient to reach deep enough into the concrete (at least 70 mm (3 inches)).

This is crucial, especially since the cabinets must support several kilograms of weight when loaded.

If possible, avoid mixing different types of anchors. Consistency improves load capacity and simplifies maintenance. When installing, the screw connections should be tightened with a torque wrench to ensure optimal strength.

An additional tip: When drilling, make sure to pay close attention to the alignment of the cabinets. The mounting rails should be perfectly level, as this ensures better load distribution for the cabinets.

I also recommend blowing out all threaded and anchor holes before the final installation to remove any debris that could interfere with the insertion of the heavy-duty anchors.

Another important point is to select the anchors and screws not only based on the wall material but also considering the weight of the cabinet and any potential load (e.g., from installed heavy kitchen appliances). The combination of mounting rails, M8 heavy-duty anchors, and properly drilled holes is the industry standard and has proven reliable over many years in concrete walls.
