SuatteHello everyone, I am currently planning a renovation of my Ikea Metod kitchen and am looking for as many specific experiences, tips, and advice on the process as possible. I am particularly interested in whether the existing cabinet carcass structure is suitable for modifications and what challenges others have faced when replacing fronts and countertops. The installation of the drawers and fitting the sink are also causing me some concern – does anyone have practical advice that could save time and effort? Additionally, it would be very helpful if you could briefly describe the equipment you chose and how satisfied you are with the durability of the materials. Thank you in advance!

I renovated my Metod kitchen about two years ago and can share some tips that should help you:
- Cabinets: Ikea offers fairly sturdy cabinets that look great when repainted or covered with foil. Make sure to tighten the hinge screws properly, as they tend to loosen during assembly.
- Replacing fronts: This is relatively easy since the fronts are standardized. Be sure to use the right screws for the new fronts, otherwise, everything will be misaligned.
- Countertop: Many choose a thicker countertop than the original. A carpenter can help here, as cutting requires precise tools.
- Sink installation: For me, the most challenging part was ensuring the cutout fit exactly. I recommend measuring the sink precisely before buying the countertop.
- Drawers: There are different systems; in my experience, Metod drawers are very durable and run smoothly, but incorrect installation can cause them to stick quickly.
In short: plan carefully, take your time for precise work, and you will be rewarded with a beautiful and functional kitchen. If you want more details, feel free to ask.

GUSTAVO5613 Jul 2021 08:13Hello Suatte,
I would like to take the opportunity to address your concerns in more detail, as I have renovated and expanded my Ikea Metod kitchen several times and have learned many details that are often overlooked during the initial planning.
First, regarding the construction of the carcasses: The Metod modules are made of 16 mm (5/8 inch) particleboard with a melamine resin coating, which makes them sturdy but also sensitive to moisture. When installing the sink, absolute precision is crucial because the surrounding material can swell otherwise. I recommend sealing the area well and, if necessary, placing a moisture barrier under the countertop to prevent water damage.
Regarding the fronts: They are very easy to replace thanks to standardized drill holes. However, make sure to check the correct hinge hole dimensions, especially if you want to switch to glass or solid wood fronts, as these sometimes have different mounting points.
A major topic for me is the countertop: When renovating, you should consider the difference between Ikea’s stock countertops and higher-quality alternative materials. Standard countertops are more affordable but less resistant to heat and scratches. When measuring the sink and cooktop precisely, it is advisable to account for tolerances to avoid later adjustments.
I found the installation of drawer slides to be very finely adjustable, but it is essential to work very carefully when installing the rails. Even small deviations can cause the slides to stick later.
Finally, a tip: Ikea offers a planning service that takes time but really helps to avoid mistakes during preparation.
One question for you: Are you working alone or with professional help? This often makes a big difference in the process.

One question for you: Are you working alone or with professional help? That often makes a big difference in the process.Thank you very much for the detailed advice! Your question is very valid: I plan to do most of the work myself since I am generally skilled with DIY tasks, but for certain connections like the sink or the countertop, I definitely want to ensure professional support. I am also taking my time because precise and durable execution is important to me. I am especially interested in experiences regarding the surface treatment of the cabinet carcasses, in case someone wants to refurbish them instead of buying new ones. Is it worthwhile, or is it better to just buy new?

You can lightly sand them with fine-grit sandpaper and then paint them with a matte acrylic paint that adheres well to melamine-coated surfaces. This saves time and money and is more sustainable. It is important to remove all screws and moving parts before painting and to thoroughly clean off any dust.
However, if the carcasses are damaged or heavily worn, you should replace them.
