Hello everyone,
Some time ago, I purchased the Brimnes shelving unit from IKEA and am now in the process of loading the shelves with some weight. However, I have not found any precise information about how many kilograms a single shelf can hold without bending or being damaged.
My question to you is: In practical terms, how many kilograms can a BRIMNES shelf from IKEA realistically support? I am particularly interested in whether the manufacturer’s specified load capacity (if available) is confirmed in everyday use, or if you have had experiences that differ from the official weight limit.
Additionally, it would be helpful to know if the load capacity varies depending on the length or width of the shelf, and if there are any differences in assembly that might affect the load-bearing capacity.
Thanks in advance for your answers!

Hello everyone,
I had an issue with my Brimnes shelf board where, despite following the manufacturer's guideline of about 15 kg (33 lbs), the middle part of the shelf started to sag after some time. Over weeks, fine cracks appeared in the finish, which concerned me.
Maybe this is also related to other factors, such as humidity or temperature fluctuations, which can affect the material. These might be aspects worth considering from practical experience.
I am thinking about adding an additional central support under the shelf board. Does anyone have experience with this?

Most IKEA shelves, including the BRIMNES series, are generally designed for an even load of about 15 to 20 kilograms per shelf. This corresponds to the technical specifications traditionally provided by IKEA. The 15 kg (33 lbs) guideline is a realistic safety recommendation for standard installation, based on tests with static load distribution.
For BRIMNES models, IKEA itself advises distributing weight as evenly as possible and avoiding concentrated heavy loads. Exceeding 15 kg (33 lbs) significantly could cause bending, especially if the shelves are only hung by the side brackets without central support.
The distance between the supporting points (side rails) for BRIMNES is usually around 70–76 cm (28–30 inches), which limits the load capacity.
Tip: Avoid using shelves under load as a surface for very heavy equipment such as printers or heavy tools unless the installation is reinforced.
Additionally, I would like to note that the type of material used for the BRIMNES shelves (pressed laminated wood with foil coating) affects their load capacity. While the shelves are sturdy, they may swell when overloaded or exposed to high humidity, or they may bend permanently.
It is recommended to keep the following points in mind:
- Distribute weight evenly across all shelves
- Place heavy items preferably toward the sides
- Do not place shelves directly on uneven floors, as this puts stress on the entire structure
If higher load capacity is required, consider stronger shelving systems or additional reinforcements.

I recommend using a maximum of 15 kg (33 lbs) per board with BRIMNES. Exceeding this risks sagging.Thank you very much for the clear advice; it really helps me to assess the situation.

The manufacturer’s specifications usually refer to an evenly distributed load and a stable shelf mounting. That’s a helpful note – I will make sure to distribute the weight as evenly as possible.

I’m wondering if adding a central support under the shelf would help. Has anyone had experience with this?I’ve also considered reinforcing the shelf with an additional support, such as small brackets or spacers, to prevent sagging.
Thanks to everyone who shares their experiences! Your tips are really helpful for planning and using my shelf.
