Hello everyone, I am planning to retrofit my existing IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets with soft-close drawers and then install them professionally. Specifically, I want to know which retrofit kits for soft-close are recommended, what special considerations should be taken into account when removing and installing the drawers, and whether it is better to use IKEA’s mechanisms or possibly compatible third-party options. I am also interested in how much effort the conversion typically requires and if any additional tools might be needed. Has anyone had experience with this or can provide advice on the best approach—especially regarding the fit and durability of retrofitted soft-close systems?

For retrofitting soft-close functionality on IKEA Metod cabinets with side-mounted drawers, I recommend the following technical procedure:

- First, select the correct product: IKEA offers Maximera soft-close drawer slides designed for a maximum load of 15 kg (33 lbs) per drawer.
- Installation is done using a clip system, no drilling required, which simplifies the process.
- For a drawer width of 60 cm (24 inches), it is advisable to choose the sturdier version if heavy contents are planned.
- The drawer slides are available in lengths suitable for a 40 cm (16 inches) drawer depth.

Tools: Phillips screwdriver, spirit level, and possibly a drill for the cabinet interior sides if adjustments become necessary.

It is important that the installation on existing drawers is carried out precisely according to the instructions to avoid later damage to the slides or dampers. For increased stability and durability, regular checking of the screws after extended use is recommended.

Hey, retrofitting is really fun! 😊 I installed soft-close systems on my Metod cabinets, and I can only say: it was worth every penny! The drawers now close very quietly and smoothly, which makes the kitchen feel very high-quality. The key is to work precisely and make the adjustments before you finalize everything. And don’t worry about the effort – you’ll definitely succeed!

whether I can simply order an upgrade kit from IKEA for these specific rails or if I should turn to third-party suppliers

IKEA upgrade kits fit perfectly. You can try third-party suppliers, but they are often more difficult to adjust.

In addition to the previous discussion: If the existing drawer front is old or warped, it might be necessary to realign the front after installing the soft-close slides. Some users report that due to the damper units, the drawers need to be mounted slightly higher or lower than before.

A tip: If you want the drawer to close especially smoothly, you can adjust the dampers afterwards – this is possible with some soft-close models.

If you are considering third-party products, be sure to check the load capacity specifications carefully, as IKEA generally designs for standard loads. Details such as screw lengths and attachment points should also be thoroughly checked to avoid damaging the cabinet.

I’m curious: Are you planning to install it yourself or will someone else do it?

Thank you for the clarification; that really helps me with my decision.

I plan to do the installation myself, although I don’t have professional carpentry experience. I’m reasonably technically skilled and have basic tools, but of course I want to take my time to avoid mistakes during assembly.
