ᐅ What height would you recommend for a garden fence?

Hello,

we have purchased a newly built semi-detached house.

We are currently considering what fence height to choose and suggest to our neighbors.

Our garden is 10m (33 feet) wide and 20m (66 feet) long.
The fence will be installed on the right and left sides, up to the opposite wall. (opposite wall is about 140–160cm (55–63 inches) high)

The fence will later be fitted with privacy slats to allow us to sit in the garden with privacy.
The fence should have a good height so that we are not constantly visible to all neighbors.

We also do not want to chat by the fence with our neighbors every day; we want to have peace in the garden. If there is something to discuss, you can just go over and ring the doorbell.

However, the fence should not be too tall and give a bunker-like impression, and it should not block too much sunlight.

What fence height would you recommend?

We were thinking about 160cm (63 inches), possibly 180cm (71 inches).

For the terrace, I would choose a fence 180 cm (70.9 inches) high. A depth of 3 m (9.8 feet) so that when sitting on the terrace, you have a certain level of privacy. Almost everyone here in our new development has done it this way. From a depth of 3 m (9.8 feet) onward, the fence height can be lower.

We also have 180 cm (71 inches) along the entire depth of the terrace, then it continues lower. I would keep it that high on the terrace as well; most people can still see over anything above 160 cm (63 inches) 🙂

180cm (71 inches) and then with privacy slats as well?

“Prisoner No. 2486 and No. 7486, report for yard time!”

Sorry, that looks really bad! You can install a 2m (6.5 ft) high privacy fence directly next to the neighbor’s terrace, that’s okay. Otherwise, a fence height of 100–120cm (39–47 inches) is better. And behind the fence, a flower bed with shrubs, bamboo, small fruit trees, sea buckthorn… whatever you like.

If you want complete privacy on the terrace, I would simply add a second row of planting with bushes or similar in front of the terrace. With 20m (66 ft) garden length, there is enough space for that.

Best regards,
Andreas

Unfortunately, flowers alone won't provide any adequate privacy, I'm afraid.

“Flowers” is quite a broad term. Mullein plants can grow over 2m (6.5 ft) tall, and if planted densely, they can offer decent screening. However, I think the main issue for the original poster is that they aren’t exactly sure what they want. A hedge, a flowering hedge, a fence, or a prison fence?
A fence at 1.60m (5.25 ft) is lower than most people’s eye level, so it’s not suitable for privacy screening.

Between our terraces, we have a stone wall that is 2m (6.5 ft) high, with a fence continuing from there.

The fence is also important to me because I don’t want neighbors to always be able to start conversations when I’m in the garden.

How high would you make the fence after the terrace? 1m (3.3 ft) is definitely far too low.

We also have a dog, so the fence should be high enough that he cannot jump over it.

Are you sure that a semi-detached house is the right choice for you and that you shouldn’t rather take a 2000 m² (0.5 acres) plot at AdW?

If you don’t want to be bothered, just talk to the neighbor about it. That’s why I wouldn’t build a prison yard.
