FrankChief11 May 2023 13:46Hello,
we have purchased a newly built semi-detached house.
We are currently considering what fence height to choose and suggest to our neighbors.
Our garden is 10m (33 feet) wide and 20m (66 feet) long.
The fence will be installed on the right and left sides, up to the opposite wall. (opposite wall is about 140–160cm (55–63 inches) high)
The fence will later be fitted with privacy slats to allow us to sit in the garden with privacy.
The fence should have a good height so that we are not constantly visible to all neighbors.
We also do not want to chat by the fence with our neighbors every day; we want to have peace in the garden. If there is something to discuss, you can just go over and ring the doorbell.
However, the fence should not be too tall and give a bunker-like impression, and it should not block too much sunlight.
What fence height would you recommend?
We were thinking about 160cm (63 inches), possibly 180cm (71 inches).

I have already checked, and there are no restrictions. We are allowed to install fences up to 2m (6.5 feet) high.

Jurassic13511 May 2023 14:37Maybe reconsider a hedge. It generally provides more privacy and also reduces noise better than a privacy screen strip, which is often quite unattractive. So, a fence with a hedge planted directly in front would turn the garden into a more pleasant space rather than just lawn with a wire panel fence. 🙂
As for the height, go with whatever feels comfortable for you, especially if the building permit / planning permission doesn’t specify anything. I would generally recommend around 160 cm (63 inches) and plant some trees along the edges here and there to avoid the feeling of a prison yard.

We definitely need to fully fence our garden because we have a dog, and he should not be able to escape anywhere. We also want to occasionally leave the dog alone or unsupervised in the garden (if he wants to in the summer) without having to worry that he might escape.
In the middle of the garden, we plan to sow grass. Along the outside of the fence, we want to create flower beds so that most of the fence will be hidden from view in the garden.
However, it will take several years for the plants to grow enough to cover the fence, which is why we will also use privacy strips so the dog cannot see through.
We don’t like the look of a hedge at all, so we prefer to plant many different flowers between the fence and the lawn.

We were thinking about 160cm (63 inches), maybe 180cm (71 inches)Varied heights. Near the terrace, on the right and left, the height you mentioned is fine. Elsewhere, around 120cm (47 inches) is better. Otherwise, the garden can feel like a prison yard. I would also recommend planting hedges. For example, European beech, which is easy to trim and keeps its leaves in winter. If left untrimmed, it grows quite quickly and tall—useful if you want a higher boundary after all.
