ᐅ Rolled sod or sowing seeds yourself?

Hello,

we are planning the garden for our new build and have now reached the stage of deciding on the lawn.

We want to edge the lawn with mowing guides (about 24cm (9.5 inches) wide) and have the lawn regularly maintained by a robotic mower later.

What would you recommend: laying sod or sowing the lawn from seed ourselves? We have about 150m² (1,615 sq ft) of lawn area.

Which grass type would be suitable for us?
The lawn should be low-maintenance and resilient (it shouldn’t dry out quickly in summer or become waterlogged during heavy rain).
Most of the lawn is in full sun with little shade (south-west facing).

The lawn should also withstand regular walking and running (for when children play or with the dog).

The house handover is planned for February or March 2023.

I hope you can help me (I’m not very experienced with this).

Trust me, your neighbor is the biggest snitch.

Water meters are only read once a year. And blasting bans are always temporary. So who knows when blasting actually took place?
And even if there was a general blasting ban, who can prove that I didn’t use the water inside the house if I don’t have a separate external water meter? Maybe I shower five times a day?

Check what kind of water meter you have. Most likely a digital radio water meter.
Then you’re not showering five times a day, but rather spending one hour under the rain shower.
Not everyone needs to blast, and some do follow the rules.

No, it’s a fully analog one, no wireless. And it was installed just 9 months ago.

Simply install underfloor irrigation. You won’t see or hear anything 🙂
But we also have traditional water meters.

Our garden layout is very simple: 10 x 20m (33 x 66 ft), rectangular, with a lawn in the middle, flower beds all around, and a terrace by the house.

This is a typical way to start with a new build. For some, it stays like this, but many discover their enjoyment of garden design after a year or two, and then the flower beds increase while the lawn diminishes. At this stage, I wouldn’t recommend creating too many expensive or complex features that might need to be removed later. Live in your home for a while first, experiment with what you really like and enjoy. Even if you hated mowing the lawn as a teenager, it can suddenly become a great pleasure in your own garden.
