Hello,
we are planning the garden for our new build and have now reached the stage of deciding on the lawn.
We want to edge the lawn with mowing guides (about 24cm (9.5 inches) wide) and have the lawn regularly maintained by a robotic mower later.
What would you recommend: laying sod or sowing the lawn from seed ourselves? We have about 150m² (1,615 sq ft) of lawn area.
Which grass type would be suitable for us?
The lawn should be low-maintenance and resilient (it shouldn’t dry out quickly in summer or become waterlogged during heavy rain).
Most of the lawn is in full sun with little shade (south-west facing).
The lawn should also withstand regular walking and running (for when children play or with the dog).
The house handover is planned for February or March 2023.
I hope you can help me (I’m not very experienced with this).

There is no need to dismantle anything. You can simply use a different head or install an additional sprinkler. A robotic lawn mower does not prevent you from mowing manually. Many people use the robot during the week and on vacation, then mow with a reel mower on the weekend.

They all have to / want to blow them up anywayUnless you have the combination of a super eco-friendly, know-it-all, wannabe neighborhood watch. They’re not exactly in a glass house and are pretty good at throwing stones 😉@Pwnage619 There are also plastic tanks that don’t have to be buried as deep. For larger capacity, you can combine them. You can even install them yourself with a mini excavator before landscaping the garden.

Pwnage6194 Jun 2022 17:44We definitely want to keep the lawn area and only create flower beds around the edges.
I was thinking of laying the pipes before sowing the lawn.
One more question: Is an automatic irrigation system really worth it if you only water with drinking water? Or does it use too much water and unnecessarily increase your water costs?

Or does it just use too much water and cost you unnecessary money? You don’t have to turn on the system if running it is too expensive for you 😉
But then you should ask yourself the question that has already been posed several times in this thread: Is a water-thirsty English lawn (hopefully @rick2018 won’t complain about that term) in full sun the right type of greenery? Or wouldn’t it be smarter to let it grow a bit taller and provide shade with trees? Alternatively, consider creating the option to use rainwater (but be careful: when irrigation is most needed for the lawn, the rainwater tank is probably emptiest).

Kreisrund6 Jun 2022 08:53Whether it is worth it is something only you can decide for yourself. I would never even consider using drinking water for lawn irrigation. In dry summers, the lawn turns brown, but it recovers afterwards. To me, that is nature. However, this is just my personal opinion and may only be of limited help to you.
