Pwnage6191 Jun 2022 10:43Hello,
we are planning the garden for our new build and have now reached the stage of deciding on the lawn.
We want to edge the lawn with mowing guides (about 24cm (9.5 inches) wide) and have the lawn regularly maintained by a robotic mower later.
What would you recommend: laying sod or sowing the lawn from seed ourselves? We have about 150m² (1,615 sq ft) of lawn area.
Which grass type would be suitable for us?
The lawn should be low-maintenance and resilient (it shouldn’t dry out quickly in summer or become waterlogged during heavy rain).
Most of the lawn is in full sun with little shade (south-west facing).
The lawn should also withstand regular walking and running (for when children play or with the dog).
The house handover is planned for February or March 2023.
I hope you can help me (I’m not very experienced with this).

WilderSueden1 Jun 2022 10:57These are mixed topics. Whether your lawn floods during rain mainly depends on your soil. Poorly draining soil can be improved by mixing in sand.
The other question is what kind of lawn you want. I see a bit of a wishlist but no clear direction. On one hand, there’s talk of a robotic mower, and on the other, children and dogs.
Do you want a golf course look or more of a daisy and wildflower lawn? A pure grass lawn requires a lot of maintenance and needs plenty of water in summer. Frequent mowing with a robotic mower promotes strong growth and can actually worsen the problem. A wildflower lawn doesn’t need that, and instead of a robotic mower, you mow manually every three weeks on a high setting. Lack of water actually works in your favor here because everything grows more slowly.

Pwnage6191 Jun 2022 11:16We had already decided that we want a robotic lawn mower to take care of mowing for us.
I can’t say much about the soil yet because the topsoil was set aside during the construction phase. On the hill where the topsoil was stored, everything is already growing quite well.
We would be happy with a nice, green, lush lawn that doesn’t dry out and turn brown quickly during the summer (something like a golf course lawn).
Additionally, the robotic mower should mow the lawn every few days. The lawn should also be able to withstand playing by dogs and children.
If all of this even works together.
What do you think about special types of grass designed for robotic lawn mowers?

Roll turf or seeding ... opinions differ, each has its pros and cons.
Roll turf is advantageous in terms of labor and can be used more quickly (especially by children).
Seeded lawns require more effort since several steps must be completed. It is definitely cheaper (if you participate in the work yourself), but you need to take care of the area longer and keep it free from children during that time.
In the end, for 150 square meters (1,615 square feet), I find the price difference of roll turf to be negligible. The price per square meter online is around 2.50€ (approximately $2.50).
For this size, I honestly think a robotic mower is unnecessary — it takes about 10 minutes to mow it manually, and you will also need a proper mower in addition to a robot mower, for example at the start of the season (or you can rent one).
You also need to consider whether you want to keep mulched grass on the lawn or prefer it to be collected using a mower.

Pwnage6191 Jun 2022 11:30Currently, we don’t have children but plan to have at least one 🙂
Since there is plenty to do inside a new build, it’s not a problem to give the lawn the time it needs.
Some friends of mine use a Worx robotic lawn mower for a lawn of about 100sqm (1,075 sq ft). They are satisfied with the fact that the lawn mows itself.
They have high L-shaped edging stones along the lawn, so they need to trim the edges every few months with an edging tool.
For the first cut in spring, they also use the robotic mower (which supposedly can handle it without any problems).

We had already thought that we wanted a robotic mower to take the work of mowing off our hands. Believe me, for that small area, it’s not really work. My property is over 1000sqm (12,000 sq ft), that’s work 😀
