Hello,

we are planning the garden for our new build and have now reached the stage of deciding on the lawn.

We want to edge the lawn with mowing guides (about 24cm (9.5 inches) wide) and have the lawn regularly maintained by a robotic mower later.

What would you recommend: laying sod or sowing the lawn from seed ourselves? We have about 150m² (1,615 sq ft) of lawn area.

Which grass type would be suitable for us?
The lawn should be low-maintenance and resilient (it shouldn’t dry out quickly in summer or become waterlogged during heavy rain).
Most of the lawn is in full sun with little shade (south-west facing).

The lawn should also withstand regular walking and running (for when children play or with the dog).

The house handover is planned for February or March 2023.

I hope you can help me (I’m not very experienced with this).

As I mentioned yesterday, this is simply a marketing niche and almost guarantees an additional 10-20% increase on the regular price. The first two points apply to any sports turf, and how quickly the grass blades decompose mainly depends on the weather.

Robotic lawns like those from Gartenwild, for example, are great (they spread extensively and suppress weeds, etc.), but they require a lot of nutrients and water. The dominant grass species in these mixtures is Supina. However, this is more suitable for people who treat their lawn as a hobby. I don’t get that impression from you. A standard sports and play lawn is just as suitable for robots.

All right, we will then choose a sports and play lawn.

May I ask again about the automatic irrigation system?

What do you need for that?

You install an irrigation timer at the water tap, which opens the flow for a set number of minutes/seconds and lets the water through.

The water is then distributed through hoses to the sprinklers, if I understood correctly? (Simply put)

Would an automatic irrigation system even be worthwhile for a garden of around 200sqm (2,150 sq ft)?

Absolutely. I have them myself on the lawn on the garage roof (approximately 120m2 (1,292 sq ft) of lawn), including a robotic mower.
However, it is not as simple as it may seem.

What should be considered when planning an automatic irrigation system?

Our garden layout is quite simple: 10x20m (33x66 ft) rectangular, with a lawn in the middle, flower beds around the edges, and a terrace by the house.

How do I plan the irrigation, and which components do I need?

I have no experience, sorry, and I mostly find Gardena products when searching online.
