Hello,
we are planning the garden for our new build and have now reached the stage of deciding on the lawn.
We want to edge the lawn with mowing guides (about 24cm (9.5 inches) wide) and have the lawn regularly maintained by a robotic mower later.
What would you recommend: laying sod or sowing the lawn from seed ourselves? We have about 150m² (1,615 sq ft) of lawn area.
Which grass type would be suitable for us?
The lawn should be low-maintenance and resilient (it shouldn’t dry out quickly in summer or become waterlogged during heavy rain).
Most of the lawn is in full sun with little shade (south-west facing).
The lawn should also withstand regular walking and running (for when children play or with the dog).
The house handover is planned for February or March 2023.
I hope you can help me (I’m not very experienced with this).

If the ground here hadn’t become so hilly (2m (6.5 ft) of fill, now everything is still settling), I would be really happy with my lawn... It was installed by a local sod specialist... but I can’t say I put even a little more effort into it than with the one I seeded myself... I fertilize both, and both are maintained by a robot mower... The seed mix was from Amazon...
As with everything: it always depends on the perspective and the specific requirements.
We bought an old house and renovated it, featuring a beautiful selection of trees, hedges, shrubs, and roses, all arranged in a natural and low-maintenance style.
In this context, a smooth green lawn made with turf looks quite different compared to when it is surrounded by gravel and stone gardens.
Turf is certainly no guarantee, but what most suppliers deliver (I currently have four in my neighborhood) is very, very good quality. Achieving a similar result requires persistence and simply a lot of time.

I didn’t express myself clearly.
We don’t want a real golf course lawn.
We just want a nice, green, ordinary lawn that you can easily walk on and play on, preferably one that is durable and can tolerate some minor imperfections.
If weeds become too much, of course we would pull them out ourselves, but we prefer to leave the mowing to a robot mower.
I also understand that the garden will require occasional maintenance like fertilizing, scarifying, and so on, but I want to avoid the weekly or biweekly mowing.

But what about lawns specifically designed for robotic mowers?
They should also be very durable, grow more in width, and decompose quickly to serve as fertilizer.
These are available as seeds and also as turf rolls.
