Hello,
we are planning the garden for our new build and have now reached the stage of deciding on the lawn.
We want to edge the lawn with mowing guides (about 24cm (9.5 inches) wide) and have the lawn regularly maintained by a robotic mower later.
What would you recommend: laying sod or sowing the lawn from seed ourselves? We have about 150m² (1,615 sq ft) of lawn area.
Which grass type would be suitable for us?
The lawn should be low-maintenance and resilient (it shouldn’t dry out quickly in summer or become waterlogged during heavy rain).
Most of the lawn is in full sun with little shade (south-west facing).
The lawn should also withstand regular walking and running (for when children play or with the dog).
The house handover is planned for February or March 2023.
I hope you can help me (I’m not very experienced with this).

@Myrna_Loy Of course, the house that @rick2018 built is in a completely different league. But his posts are worth reading because they are well thought out. I like his approach to the project and how he presented it.Completely agree. But if you’re a newbie builder and don’t realize that Rick built at the very high-end level with great attention to detail, you won’t understand that his tips come with a price tag that basically means “price on request.” 😉 I don’t ask Jan Frodeno for the ideal training plan just to get a little fitter either.Although my irrigation tips here were not high-end in terms of cost 😉 Of course, with a larger budget, I would also suggest a different solution (valve box, Hunter Hydrawise controller, etc.). I can also offer affordable tips, even though I built mine somewhat more elaborately.

What you need depends on what you want.
A lawn like @rick2018 with a robot mower and automatic irrigation, or a lawn like the one described by @Myrna_Loy – which doesn’t require irrigation or a robot. That depends on the type of soil you have. We also have a lawn with many weeds, clover, daisies, etc. But if it is to stay green, it needs regular watering in our sandy soil typical of the Brandenburg region.
Water usage restrictions are common here as well, but never total; watering is always allowed during late evening and early morning hours. These restrictions apply only to groundwater so far, never to potable water. Even with a new building, we don’t have water meters that can record usage over time.
You don’t need a timer; it’s controlled by the digital water meter and the volume used. For example, when you water the garden, you consume more water because the sprinkler runs for 1 hour.
I have no idea how it works in Greifswald and the surrounding area when the 37 cubic meters are used up. It’s hard to imagine cutting off the population’s drinking water.

However, the water meters are only read once a year. And watering bans are always temporary. So who knows when the watering actually took place? And even if there was a general watering ban, who could prove that I didn’t use the water inside the house if I don’t have a separate outdoor water meter? Maybe I shower five times a day?
