Hello everyone,

Today we removed the topsoil layer (see below). Now I would like to ask about the final steps I need to complete before sowing the lawn.

1. Loosen the compacted topsoil using a motorized tiller and remove any remaining stones/weeds.
2. Re-compact the topsoil using a lawn roller.
3. Lightly loosen the soil surface with a rake.
4. Sow the grass seed.

Would you agree with this procedure, or should I do something different?

I also have soil activator and fertilizer. Should I work these into the topsoil? If yes, when?

Is there anything else I should consider?

Thanks in advance

Regards
Jörg

Hello,

thanks first for the helpful tips.
Over the weekend, we prepared the topsoil and seeded the lawn.

So far, everything is going well, but we only finished building our L-shaped retaining wall shortly before the weekend, and the topsoil has settled about 10 cm to 15 cm (4 inches to 6 inches) away from the wall (see attachment). Now my question is how I should proceed to fix this settling?

1. Let the grass grow, spread soil on top, and reseed in this area.
2. Spread soil on top and reseed in this area.
3. Let the grass grow, remove the grass, spread soil on top, and reseed in this area.

I hope I explained it clearly enough.

Thanks

Buy 60 liters (16 gallons) of potting soil, fill the spot and reseed there. Then tie a board under old shoes and firmly stomp on it. Done.

Should I do this right away or wait until the grass has grown there? And then spread the potting soil over the grass?

No more puddles on the lawn!

Yes. At least for the first three to four weeks. During the germination phase, the seeds dry out quickly and die otherwise.
I sowed over the weekend and now I’m wondering how I should proceed exactly. I watered for 2 hours this morning, but a few hours later it was dry again. Do I really need to keep it moist all the time, or is thorough watering in the morning and evening enough? Otherwise, I would need to take three weeks off, since I’m at work during midday...
