Hello

We are currently planning our new build.

We have reached the stage of choosing the windows.

We can choose between standard gray PVC windows and aluminum windows (€60 per sqm (ft²)).

What are the advantages and disadvantages of aluminum shutters compared to PVC, and is the additional cost worth it?

I also have another question regarding the security of the windows and front door. The standard security is probably sufficient, and there is no need to invest in enhanced security features, right?

Thank you very much for your help.

I just spoke with our window manufacturer.

We have 28 sqm (302 sq ft) of window area, and the additional cost for aluminum roller shutters is €59 per sqm (per 11 sq ft).

Unfortunately, we cannot change the color; it will remain the standard gray.

The motor used will be the Somfy Ilmo WT tubular motor.

What do you think, is the extra cost of about €1650 worth it for the aluminum roller shutters?

We previously had PVC and are now much more satisfied with aluminum,

For me, there would be no question.

Thank you for your quick reply.

What exactly is better about the aluminum roller shutters compared to the plastic ones?
What are the specific advantages?

The plastic roller shutters at my parents’ place have already lasted for 20 years and still look good.

Would you be willing to pay the extra 1650€ immediately?

It might be a small misunderstanding. Aluminum slats consist only of very thin aluminum sheets, basically extremely thin, which are then foam-filled. As far as I know, plastic panels are hollow profiles.

So, in terms of insulation, I consider aluminum to be better. I personally have dark green aluminum profiles, even on the west side where the sun hits full force in summer. The insulation is very good; however, they tend to warp slightly. They also get very, very hot. This would probably not be possible with plastic. Still, I am very satisfied with the roller shutters. I have simple tubular motors with remote control.

Therefore, always aluminum. They also look noticeably better. There are different profile sizes available.

However, the additional cost seems very high to me.

For example, if I order 1 sqm of foam-filled aluminum profile, 52 mm (2 inches), on a portal, it costs 57.25 EUR.
The square meter of hollow-chamber plastic, also 52 mm (2 inches), costs 29.09 EUR.

The difference between plastic and aluminum here is only 28 EUR per square meter.

How one arrives at a 60 EUR surcharge remains a mystery, probably a secret of the window manufacturer. But everyone wants to make a profit.
