Hello

We are currently planning our new build.

We have reached the stage of choosing the windows.

We can choose between standard gray PVC windows and aluminum windows (€60 per sqm (ft²)).

What are the advantages and disadvantages of aluminum shutters compared to PVC, and is the additional cost worth it?

I also have another question regarding the security of the windows and front door. The standard security is probably sufficient, and there is no need to invest in enhanced security features, right?

Thank you very much for your help.

Replacing it yourself is certainly possible, but it will cost more than the additional charge now. Prices tend to increase over time.

Hello, we used plastic for the construction. For one window (children’s room, roughly facing south) that we darkened during the day with the roller shutter, the shutter first warped and then cracked after about 4 years. The reason is that heat builds up behind the roller shutter. Manufacturers state that ventilation slots must be left open – but this is impractical with electronic roller shutters and lets light through. This issue has already been discussed by others in the forum. I have now switched to aluminum (installed it myself at a cost of under 60€ per m² (about $60 per sq. ft.)) and the problems are gone. In such cases, I would always choose aluminum now. For north-facing windows, or if the roller shutters don’t need to be fully closed during the day, plastic would be sufficient for me, although aluminum looks better and feels more premium. But no one sees that at night anyway...
