Hello
We are currently planning our new build.
We have reached the stage of choosing the windows.
We can choose between standard gray PVC windows and aluminum windows (€60 per sqm (ft²)).
What are the advantages and disadvantages of aluminum shutters compared to PVC, and is the additional cost worth it?
I also have another question regarding the security of the windows and front door. The standard security is probably sufficient, and there is no need to invest in enhanced security features, right?
Thank you very much for your help.

Pwnage61931 Jan 2022 15:55I still haven’t quite understood the exact advantages of aluminum roller shutters.
Advantages:
They look better
They are more durable
And possibly offer slightly better thermal insulation in summer
Am I forgetting anything?
Unfortunately, we can only choose the standard gray color for both versions.

One more advantage – but this was already mentioned above: they are slightly heavier and therefore operate more smoothly. Especially with small plastic roller shutters, there can sometimes be slight sticking when lowering them – particularly when they are new. Additionally (also see above): less affected by wind, which is more noticeable with medium to very large sizes.

Steinaufstein41 Feb 2022 12:48We have plastic and aluminum roller shutters. The aluminum shutters are installed on the windows that are too large for plastic shutters. There is no noticeable difference visually or otherwise. So, I wouldn’t spend extra money on aluminum roller shutters.
In the new house, we are only getting them because of the color and because it is standard with our builder.

Pwnage6192 Feb 2022 15:13I’m now completely unsure whether the extra cost is worth it or not ://
Unfortunately, I can’t really judge because I’ve never had aluminum roller shutters before. I was satisfied with the PVC ones up until now (didn’t know anything better either), and none of them have broken on me so far.

Well, for me the matter is clear.
My own experience says no problem with plastic.
The forum says aluminum is generally better, but your additional cost is too high.
--> Use plastic, and if it becomes unsightly or broken in 15 years, replace it with aluminum (then also in your preferred color) / for particularly large units, possibly choose aluminum right away.

Pwnage6192 Feb 2022 16:32I am not familiar with aluminum, so it is difficult for me to decide whether it is worth it and later regret that it wasn’t.
However, I don’t want to spend more money later to replace it.
Is it possible to replace something like this yourself?
Changing the color later is also not an option because it is specified in the building permit / planning permission for a uniform overall appearance.
