ᐅ Is the real estate market increasingly forcing families to build their own homes?

Actually, we would prefer to avoid building. Unfortunately, existing properties within a 20 km (12 miles) radius have become quite expensive, and affordable rental houses with small gardens are simply scarce.
Until now, we have been living in an old rental apartment without a garden. We would like to change that, but there is a lack of options. The listings on various platforms are overcrowded with families looking for affordable housing.
Who is familiar with this situation, and how do you deal with it?

For too many, building a house is more about prestige than purpose.
We currently live on the ground floor of our house. Three of us in two rooms plus a shower toilet because the attic is not yet habitable. Thanks to the botched work of our construction company! [/sarcasm]
Terrace? Garden? Will be done at the earliest next year.
What do the neighbors say about that? I couldn’t care less!
Driveway? Maybe this year if the money allows.
What do the neighbors say about that? I couldn’t care less!
Carport? Garage? Medium term – maybe in 10 years.
What do the neighbors say about that? I couldn’t care less!
Why?
In recent years, I have too often been involuntarily on cemeteries. This made me realize that status is complete nonsense. Being status-conscious only burdens you and distorts your character in a bad way.

Today, that seems almost unthinkable. How many people move into a house without furniture? Many also discard their old furniture to refurnish. That costs a lot. And the driveway has to be paved immediately. The garden must be landscaped too; what else would the neighbors say?...

In recent years, I have found myself on cemeteries more often than I wanted. That made me realize that status is complete nonsense. Welcome to the club.Garden Part 1 last year
Garden Part 2 and front door this year
Garage interior + gate + driveway next year
Slope should be finished in about 4 years
Why?
1. To benefit from it tax-wise for as long as possible
2. Funds need to be available (we don’t want to touch our savings)
3. This is common practice in our area
I think people would have considered us crazy if the landscaping contractor had come and completed everything last year
4. I find it hard to decide. The more you read and see, the more ideas come up. I’d probably need about 5000 m² (54000 sq ft) of garden
5. We want to do a lot of the garden work ourselves, so the only free time we have is Saturdays when we don’t have to work
I don’t care about what people say; they’ll complain anyway.

Being status-conscious only burdens you and negatively distorts your character. As a result, owning a home with all the status and stress it brings is actually not important to me as the person asking. However, the lack of affordable rental houses or apartments with a small garden forces families like mine to consider building a home.
Because depending on the region, renting can be similarly expensive or even more costly.
