Hello.
I am considering having a well drilled. Does anyone have experience with this?
Is it worth it? If so, after how many years, assuming it will mainly be used for garden irrigation?
Does anyone know about the costs? So far, I only have approximate prices (about 90-100€ per meter drilled).
Of course, I don’t know how deep the groundwater is.

Well, a 5m (16.4 ft) pool easily holds 25,000 liters (6,604 gallons) here. We also have a well because it was already there, but even if you fill the pool 2.3 times, that’s about 600 to, let’s say, 100 euros from the tap... so at 5,000 euros it would take 50 years for it to pay off.... but that’s a different matter. I don’t think a well like that can really be economically worthwhile. That’s right! For 5,000 euros, I would have a cistern installed during the groundworks. Maybe the drilling company was thinking of a brine borehole for a heat pump?
With low groundwater, meaning a drilling depth up to 10m (33 ft), a well with a pump and everything included shouldn’t cost much more than 1,000 euros.

Apparently, we flush more sparingly... I don’t need 5 liters (1.3 gallons) just for “pee.” And watering the lawn is also needed less often than you might think; a few times during heat waves has been enough for me.
It’s easier to calculate with 5 liters (1.3 gallons). Sometimes it’s less, sometimes more, sometimes there are guests, or you go to the bathroom more often, etc.
My point was just to illustrate how quickly a lot of water adds up.

I had a well flushed, and it cost 400 euros. Whether it’s worth it? I have no idea, but I have a second water supply, which I somehow find quite nice...

You don’t actually need to water the lawn constantly; however, it depends on which type of grass was planted. The exception is the initial seeding. Flower beds are watered twice on hot days.
Border plantings, such as shrubs or trees, rarely need watering except during the first two years.
With a budget of €5,000, I would carefully consider whether this investment would eventually pay off.
Running the toilet flush water for this purpose is a good idea. We had considered that as well.
