Hello everyone, we are considering drilling a well ourselves or having it done for garden irrigation. We would need to go about 12-15 meters (39-49 feet) deep. What costs should we expect if we do it ourselves or hire someone?
Hello
Drilling your own well?!
A few meters is no problem.
With 8 meters (26 feet) of water, it’s not that simple. You then need to go at least 3 meters (10 feet) deeper into the water. That means drilling 8 meters (26 feet) plus 3 meters (10 feet) deeper to ensure you always have enough water.
It really depends on the soil layers you have. With clay, it’s quite easy. You can only drill horizontally in gravel, so you have to drill inside the pipe. You insert the pipe into the ground and use a smaller drill bit. When you pull the drill up, the pipe needs to be weighted, and as you pull the drill up, the pipe slips further down.
You can rent the equipment, but it’s almost impossible to do in just one weekend.

It really depends on the ground conditions.
It can go quickly. If you have larger gravel layers, it becomes difficult. Every now and then a bigger stone means you’ll be working hard for 10cm (4 inches) in about an hour. A large pebble and you have to start again somewhere else.
As I said: basically yes. But....

StevenThat’s true, of course. No one can know what the conditions will be like, so I’m just going by our soil. It was also the only time I was involved in drilling a well.
