Hello everyone, a few years ago I bought a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA and have been using it daily since then. Now I am especially interested in your long-term opinions: Would you choose to buy your KALLAX shelving unit again if you had to decide today?

I am particularly curious about the following points: How durable is the shelving unit after several years of everyday use? How does it perform when combining different uses (books, decorations, heavier items)? Are there any noticeable signs of wear or material issues?

I am considering whether to use the KALLAX again for other rooms or to choose alternative shelving systems instead. Looking forward to your experiences and opinions!

I would buy it again, mainly because of the value for money.

Of course, you shouldn’t expect miracles. If you want something high-quality, you’ll need to look elsewhere.

KALLAX is cheap and versatile, but in long-term tests, the chipboard material can cause problems

Haha, that’s true, but honestly: at that price, you shouldn’t expect gold frames :-)

I’ve had mine for 5 years now, still super easy to clean and durable – it’s even standing in my wet kitchen. Just wipe it once with a cloth, done 🙂

Conclusion: More than fair for the price. If you want something deluxe, go for something else. For everyone else: thumbs up!

I would find it interesting if someone could provide objective experience or comparison data.

That is certainly a valid point.

Unfortunately, there are hardly any official long-term studies on furniture like KALLAX. My experience is based on practical use—especially regarding material stability and load capacity.

Compared to more expensive wooden shelves, you can definitely notice the difference, but it’s not always dramatic. For me personally, the price-performance ratio is what matters most; that’s why I don’t regret my purchase.

I have had my KALLAX for about 8 years and have used it in various rooms throughout my apartment, sometimes as a room divider, sometimes against the wall.

The construction has survived several moves, the screws hold well, and there is no wobbling or warping when assembled correctly.

However, I recommend firmly attaching the back panel and adding extra wall fixings if needed. This provides additional stability.

So, if I had to decide again: yes, I would buy this model again. It’s solid, practical, and affordable.
