MATTHIAS6015 May 2020 09:17I have a question that has been on my mind for a while, and I hope someone here can help. Will the popular IKEA shelf unit KALLAX eventually be discontinued?
I have been using this shelf myself for several years and have heard that IKEA regularly updates or replaces products. Since KALLAX is one of the best-selling shelving systems, I find it hard to believe it would simply disappear, but there are always rumors.
Does anyone here know if there is any official information or reliable indications that IKEA will discontinue the KALLAX shelf or replace it with something else?
Thank you in advance for your insights and experiences!

That is an interesting question that deserves a bit more context, as the product lifecycle at IKEA is indeed worth considering.
First of all, the KALLAX system has been very popular since its launch due to its versatility and durability. While IKEA regularly updates many product lines, KALLAX has essentially become an "evergreen," meaning the product remains almost unchanged in the range.
Whether KALLAX will eventually be discontinued depends on several factors. On one hand, material availability, production costs, and processes; on the other hand, design trends and customer feedback.
It is noteworthy that IKEA launched a sustainability initiative some time ago aimed at optimizing materials and manufacturing processes, which can also affect product portfolios. However, KALLAX has been assessed as important enough that major changes tend to involve additions or improved variants rather than a complete removal.
Therefore, I would guess that the shelving unit will not be completely discontinued but may be revised or expanded. I would be interested to know: do you use KALLAX for specific purposes where potential modifications would make a difference? That would help better assess how relevant such changes might be for you personally.

IKEA has classified KALLAX as so importantThat sums it up well – KALLAX is a real classic! 😉 I have one in my own apartment, and I don’t think IKEA will just discontinue it. The demand is huge, and on top of that, the shelving unit looks good and is very versatile.
Sure, IKEA likes to phase out products to make room for new ones, but with KALLAX, that’s going to be difficult. They practically sell it everywhere.
A little tip: If you’re unsure, I’d be more concerned about whether new colors or accessories will be released soon. They often handle that with updates. But completely disappearing? Honestly, I don’t think so.
Does anyone here have experience with similar cases at IKEA, where a best seller suddenly vanished? From what I know, it’s usually the opposite: products keep coming back. 🙂
I think it’s good that there is some critical questioning here, but I would add a bit more skepticism. Just because a product is currently popular and selling well doesn’t necessarily mean it will remain in the range forever.
What exactly does “evergreen” mean in this context? Are there reliable figures or statements from IKEA that prove KALLAX is not planned to be replaced or undergo major changes?
We should not forget that IKEA is increasingly focusing on sustainability and new materials. If KALLAX no longer meets the latest sustainability standards, this could be a valid reason to replace it.
Instead of just speculating, it would be interesting if someone has official statements or insider information. Emotional attachment to a product is understandable, but we should not rule out that changes may come.

From an objective perspective: KALLAX is currently a core product in IKEA’s range and is based on modular MDF panels, which are produced relatively cost-effectively and with resource efficiency.
At present, there is no official announcement from IKEA regarding the discontinuation or phasing out of the product.
Considering the high sales volume and wide range of applications, discontinuation is unlikely unless external factors arise, such as significant changes in raw material sourcing or a strategic realignment.
The fact that IKEA is increasingly focusing on circular economy principles and sustainable materials could, however, influence the product range sooner or later—partly through adjustments and partly through new product lines that complement or replace classic offerings.
So far, KALLAX remains firmly in the range.
