Hello everyone,

I assembled a Billy bookshelf from IKEA, following the instructions exactly. However, the top shelf panel gets stuck when inserting it. It feels like the groove doesn’t fit properly or the panel might be warped. The bookshelf is standing straight and has no visible damage. Can someone explain why the shelf is sticking despite correct assembly and how I can fix this issue? By the way, I have checked all the screws and none are over-tightened – the bookshelf should fit perfectly.

Thanks for your help!

Interesting observation. Sticking can have different causes. Two come to mind in particular: either the construction accuracy is slightly off due to material tolerances, or the board was slightly warped – which can also happen because of high moisture. Have you checked if the board is flat? Also, slight swelling at the edges caused by moisture could be the reason, which becomes apparent during assembly.

Additionally: Have you correctly identified the groove? Sometimes with BILLY, the shelves are different; there are shelves with and without back panel connections. That could be relevant.

Ah, the troublesome BILLY issue – I’m familiar with that too! 🙂

Sometimes the panels can be a bit stubborn, even when you follow all the instructions carefully. My advice: try lightly sanding the board first, especially along the edges where it sticks. A bit of sanding often removes slight thickness variations that can occur in the wood. That’s just the cost of mass-produced products. And be patient when fitting it in; sometimes a small wood fiber can simply catch.

Also: it can help to swap the shelves around if you have several – sometimes not all boards are manufactured perfectly. Good luck! 🙂

The issue with shelves sticking in the BILLY bookcase is often due to minimal manufacturing tolerances. These can cause the tongue and groove joints on the edges to not fit perfectly together.

A precise solution is to gently sand the edges of the affected shelves with fine sandpaper (grit 120-180), especially on the areas that fit into the groove. Alternatively, check if the groove itself has any residue or slight irregularities that make insertion difficult.

Additionally, the surrounding environment is important: changes in humidity can cause wood-based materials to expand slightly. If the furniture is placed in a damp room, this could be the reason.

This is a very good tip. Small wood splinters are often left behind during manufacturing that are not immediately visible. These can significantly complicate installation. Simply clean and smooth the groove with a small knife or fine sandpaper.

Also: Even if you say all screws are properly in place, double-check that none of the side panels are slightly warped. Any warping in the structure can change the groove spacing and cause the board to get stuck.

the groove doesn’t fit properly or the board is warped

This is exactly the point I want to raise. Although BILLY shelves are affordable furniture, IKEA enforces strict manufacturing standards. However, there are always some variations. It’s also interesting to note whether the board gets stuck on one side or in multiple places.

In addition, I recommend installing the shelf board with gentle force and even pressure distribution, since applying pressure in only one spot can cause it to get stuck. It can also help to tilt the shelf slightly or to rotate the board a little as you insert it, making it easier to fit into the groove.

If the board appears warped, it should be checked on a flat surface before deciding whether light adjustments are necessary.
